A quick stop to say hello, Happy Friday and wish you all a great weekend. Well here it is the last day of September. Halloween is just around the corner and before you know it, you’ll be sniffing that turkey in the oven and putting up the Christmas decorations. Time is sure flying by this year. October should have some interesting holidays to check out and write a little humor about, so I have to get my little book out and see what is brewing.

Happy Thursday Speakies:

September is coming to an end on Friday, so I think we shall celebrate September 29th and 30th holidays today. Don’t worry Guys and Dolls I’ll be back tomorrow with a brief weekend wish, but let us get started for today.

HAPPY GOOSE DAY – HEH, HEH, HEH is it the other goose I’m thinking about or are we honoring our fine feathered friends? I think it pays honor to those birds. The word goose is the English name for a number of birds belonging to the family Anatidae. This includes swans, true geese and smaller ducks. If you see a large group of geese it is called a gaggle.

BROADWAY MUSICAL DAY – I never saw a Broadway Musical in person only adaptions of various musicals or plays in high school. My favorite films of Broadway musicals have to be “South Pacific” and “West Side Story.” There are so many famous musicals to name and great number of beautiful songs that came from them. So enjoy some of that famous music today.

PUMPKIN DAY – Just make me a pie and I’ll be happy. To me October should be pumpkin month.

CHEWING GUM DAY – Too much new gum out there today. Let’s go back and remember the oldies but goodies gum. Feel free to jump in here and name your favorite chew also.

Good Tuesday Morning Speakies:

Sorry did not have a chance to post yesterday, I had a busy schedule but I’m sure most of you know what that’s like at times. We have some holidays to celebrate today.

ANCESTOR DAY – I know a lot of people like to trace their family tree and have had great success tracing their ancestors back many decades. I tried to trace my last name and my grandparents but being Polish it is very hard. I always thought my grandfather was 100% Polish but his birth place came up Prussian- Poland. Maybe when I retire I give it another go. So if you are thinking of tracing your roots, today is a great day to start. Good Luck.

WORLD TOURISM DAY – Not too many places in the world I would feel safe traveling to now. You have pirates, mad bombers, kidnapping and who knows what other village idiots are on the loose. I’ll take a nice quite Caribbean island with a pool, hammock, pina colada and some nice beauty with a large fan making with the breeze. My true world destination would be to visit the South Sea Islands of Tahiti and Bora Bora, I look at pictures of these beautiful islands and find myself being called to it just like that movie South Pacific and the song “Bali Ha’i.” Dream with me as the song is being played for your enjoyment today.

Back to reality, time to eat and drink. What a food combination holiday today is.

CHOCOLATE MILK DAY – I haven’t had a glass of chocolate milk in a long time. I remember going to grammar school and we had the choice of white milk, chocolate or an orange drink. The white milk had a bad chalky taste to me , chocolate was good but the majority of the kids chose that good old orange drink. The Burg Diary in Trenton use to deliver milk and they had a good chocolate milk in those glass bottles with the paper top. Then came all those mixes to put in milk and make you own chocolate flavor. Later tonight hit the frig and have a nice cold chocolate milk before bed time.

CORN BEEF HASH DAY – That great partner with some scrambled eggs. When Roe makes eggs she uses roast beef hash instead. We like the flavor of it over corn beef. If you never had either give them a try. So much for today, have a great day and a lovely evening.

ONE HIT WONDERS AND CHECKERS

Another weekend is almost here and we have some great days to celebrate over the weekend, so without further ado let’s start to raise our glasses to:

CHECKERS DAY – That great game played by grandpa’s on the front porch on a nice day or cool summer evening. That’s what checkers remind me of two gents who have experienced life and just relaxing. Both wearing straw hats, one may smoke a pipe, there’s some lemonade in a pitcher and kids are watching them play hoping to learn the skills of the game.

FISH AMNESTY DAY – When I go fishing I am a catch and release guy. The only time I would keep fish was on a party boat fishing for fluke. If you catch one fluke or redfish it’s not enough to feed everyone so why keep them.

On TV this weekend two shows made their debuts, The Jetsons’ and my man “Bullwinkle” J. Moose, from Frostbite Falls, Minnesota. Loved Rocky and Bullwinkle Show, it was not for the little tykes its humor was more related to young adults. Bring it back on TV Land Channel.

ONE HIT WONDER DAY – How many one hit wonders were there? I’ll name a few from my era and if you read my blog don’t be shy send me yours and I’ll post your comments. Here is my list from the 60’s:

Happy Thursday Speakies:

An obscure fact today the “Ice Cream Cone” made its debut in 1903, but records show it was mentioned in French cookbooks in 1825. What is an ice cream cone? An ice cream cone, poke or cornet is a dry cone shaped pastry made of a wafer similar to a waffle, allowing ice cream to be eaten without a bowl or spoon. We have waffle cones, wafer cones, pretzel cones and the sugar cone. So whatever your favorite cone is, grab one today, slap some of your favorite ice cream in there and enjoy.

We also celebrate “WHITE CHOCOLATE DAY.” My favorite and I know it’s some of yours too is that white chocolate Easter Bunny. I like the ears; snap a little piece of that chocolate put it in your mouth and savor the special sweetness of that white chocolate. I have a taste for a little bit right now, oh well have to settle for a root beer barrel in the office candy jar.

We’ve all heard the expression “Raining Cats and Dogs”, but we don’t know for certain its origin. Etymologists the people who study the origins of words have suggested a variety of explanations for why people use that term. For one Odin, the Norse god of storms was pictured with dogs and wolves. Witches rode their brooms in a storm and were pictured with black cats. Cats and Dogs may have come from the Greek expression cata doxa, which means “contrary to experience or belief.” If it is raining cats and dogs, it is raining unusually hard.

Happy Hump Wednesday Speakies:

Hey! We are all taking off today and play golf, not the one you ride around in a little cart and hit a little white ball and then go chase it. I’m talking miniature golf the fun game a whole family can enjoy. The first minigolf course in the world is the Ladies’ Putting Club of St. Andres in Scotland, which was founded in 1867 and still is operating and open to the public. The 18 hole course is made up of putting greens and called “The Himalayas”, and was founded by the members of the Royal & Ancient Golf Club in St. Andrews. Women had become interested in golfing but the conservative social norms of the era deemed it unacceptable for women to publicly perform the movements that a golf swing requires (conservative norms must go opinion of Joey Z). So this 18 hole course of short greens was the first miniature golf course in the world. If you visit Central Florida here are some recommended places to play golf. There are the Congo River Courses, Pirates Cove Courses and Disney World has Fantasia Gardens and Winter Summerland Courses. Before it gets too cold up North grab the family and play a few rounds but watch out for that windmill it will stop your ball every time.

Today we also honor the Croissant that flaky bread named for its crescent moon shape. They are made of a leavened variant of puff pastry. The yeast dough is layered with butter, rolled and folded several times in succession, then rolled into a sheet, a technique called laminating. They have long been a staple in French bakeries. I like a nice fresh croissant with butter for breakfast or for lunch a melted ham and cheese on a croissant. All around they are great to eat so if you can have one today.

Good Monday Morning Guys and Dolls:

Hoping you all had a nice weekend and are ready to begin the new work week. I’m never ready to begin anything on a Monday morning, but we can have some fun talking today. Today is “TALK LIKE A PIRATE DAY.” I remember the first pirate movie I ever saw it was Disney’s “Treasure Island.” It starred Bobby Driscoll as young Jim Hawkins and that famous pirate Long John Silver played by Robert Newton. As a kid I really enjoyed that movie it made me play pirates dreaming of treasure and sailing the Seven Seas. There were some great old pirate movies made and they are usually shown on Turner Movie Classics. To name a few are the Sea Hawk, Captain Blood, Black Swan and Against All Flags. I also enjoyed the Johnny Depp “Pirates of the Caribbean” series comedy, action and a few surprises thrown in. So avast me hearties and let us grab a mug of grog and have fun talking like pirates ARRRRRRRRRRR MATIES.

Batman, Batman, let’s all wish the original Batman Adam West a “Happy Birthday” today. So Speakies if you were born today September 19th Happy Birthday to you also. I’m going to kill two days in one today, as tomorrow I have some important things to do and may not have time to write.

Tomorrow we celebrate “PUNCH DAY.” That could either mean the drink or the fist, but on this one I have to go with the drink. Punches are usually served in a glass bowl with fancy cups and that long ladle that always spills some punch over the side of the cup. The punch I hate the most is the one with ice cream or sherbet in it, serve it to kids at their parties. I’ve tasted punch at resort or ship welcome parties and they all lack something mainly the rum. If you are going to make a punch let’s do it right don’t be stingy on the rum or whatever liquor you make the punch with. I want a punch that stands up and bites you.

Give that Doll of yours a big hug and kiss, maybe a little dinner out tonight or perhaps some flowers. FIG MONTH – Believe it or not, I never had a fig until two weeks ago. The local Publix store had buy one get one free. Now Roe enjoyed figs up north, our old neighbors had a fig tree and there was plenty to go around. After I bought them she asked me to try one and did I like the taste. You can call me Mr. Fig.

PLEASURE YOUR MATE MONTH – All I can say is, “I’M LEAVING THAT UP TO YOU.” No further comments from Joey Z.

LINE DANCE WEEK – There has been so many line dances over the years. I remember the Conga Line; country and western music had line dances as Latin music also. My favorite line dance was the Stroll. In fact the very first song on my site today is called the Dead Man’s Stroll, so enjoy a blast from the past, music that will never die.

CREAM FILLED DONUT DAY – Donut fans today is your day to dig into cream filled donuts. I like the round cream filled with chocolate inside and not really crazy for custard filled donuts. The best cream donut I ever had was from a bakery back home in Trenton in my younger days. We called them finger cakes, they were oblong shaped and filled with tons of cream. The bakery was Servus Bakery on Brunswick Avenue, a great bakery and a top notch cream donut.

SHAVE AND A HAIRCUT TWO BITS

Happy Tuesday Speakies:

Sorry for the short post yesterday but it was a busy day for me. Now I know you are all waiting for the answer to yesterday’s riddle. Drum roll please, the answer is an “EGG.” BAROOM BOOM. Let’s see what holidays we can raise our mugs to toast today.

BARBERSHOP DAY – I have to say the best haircuts I ever received were from Roe, she was a licensed beautician and did a great job cutting the boys and my hair. One day two years ago she told us she was retiring from the trade and we would have to find our own barbers. Do you know what kind of fear that throws in one’s mind? Where should I go, who will know how to cut my hair? Questions, questions and more questions raced through my mind. A few weeks later after I heard Roe say those words, my search started for I needed a cut. I felt as if I were searching for the Holy Grail. Driving down the road near home was a shopping center with the sign Barbershop, “what the heck let me try this place”, I said. After parking the car, I opened the door and entered the shop, greeted by the words, “Sir, please take a number.” Looking around there must have been 6 barbers plus the owner of this shop. Who should I choose or who will have my number, I was the newbie and there were no choices for me. I was called the barber was Rafael who did a great job, he is gone now to a new shop but I still visit the same shop, service is good and I’m happy, Senior discount and all.

NATIONAL PEANUT DAY – I still can remember the smell of roasting peanuts in the 5 & 10 cents stores back home as a child and that aroma still haunts me today. No smell however, can match that of the Planter’s Peanut Store in downtown Trenton, NJ. A small store sandwiched between other stores but the smell could lift you off your feet and bring you inside and it usually did for me. Roasted cashews were my favorite nut and still are today. There was nothing like eating hot roasted cashews waiting for that bus to Granny’s house. Thanks Mr. Peanut for the memories and my love for cashews.

Just a quick stop today to wish you all a great weekend. I guess the only major observance this weekend is the anniversary of September 11th and the destruction of the World Trade Center. In your prayers remember those who lost their lives and may they never be forgotten.

Being it’s the weekend there is a nice holiday all month long to celebrate, “NATIONAL BREAKFAST MONTH.” So this weekend make yourself a nice breakfast of eggs, potatoes, bacon, sausage, pork roll, nice toast and of course that cup of coffee. I'm not going to limit your breakfast only to eggs, you want pancakes, waffles, left over pizza, or a piece of that pie in the frig, help yourself. Personally I love a nice breakfast at a diner or when Roe and I cruise and it is served. I’m not one to putter in the kitchen making meals, I wish I had the talent but no luck; I can make a mean hard-boiled egg though.

I smell Friday just around the corner and I would like to wish my Guys and Dolls who are celebrating birthdays and anniversaries today a very happy one from Joey Z. Guess what today is?

TEDDY BEAR DAY – Who didn’t have a teddy bear as a kid? I can’t remember if I had one but I probably did. I know my granddaughter has about 3 or 4 of them, those Build-A-Bears; she is so proud of them and treats them like her own children. Imagination what a great gift children have and share with us. Never lose it kids and I think that should go for us adults too. I know when Roe and I were dating I gave her a stuffed monkey and we called him Jozes. That’s Polish for Joey as a good Polish friend of mine at work told me how to spell it and I have to believe her.

WONDERFUL WEIRDO DAY – As Florida goes the weird are weird and not wonderful, strange is also a good word to use. I’m sure the other states in the union have their share of these wondrous walking, talking zombies. Now Joey Z is not criticizing the entire weirdo population for they can also be called eccentric. Great thinkers, writers, actors, business people, in fact many professional people have been called weirdoes so today my weird ones I salute and honor you.

For you Florida Speakies it is “PINK FLAMINGO MONTH.” Yes those plastic birds that adorn our front lawns or flower gardens. We had them outside our house off and on since we moved here. I put two up last year but our old friend the sun has turned them into albino flamingos, soon it will be time for new ones. I’ve seen lawns covered in flocks of flaming pink flamingos. For some scientific knowledge here the word flock is the proper term used. In place of flock when it comes to flamingos, one can use: colony, regiment, flurry, stand and my favorite a flamboyance of flamingos.

Today is the day of no really important daily celebrations. However, we do have a few holidays of the month to chat about. Talk about luck, this must be my lucky month ahem, ahem.

BE KIND TO WRITERS MONTH and READ A NEW BOOK MONTH – What else can I say about writers for I am one who has written a book and if you like to read I have a great suggestion on a new book. MINE, DETAILS ON MY BLOG. I have to push it, publishing houses are not beating down my door, I am not a Stephen King as of yet.

GRANDPARENTS MONTH – It’s great to be grandparents, Roe and I really enjoy our little ones and spoil them rotten. I think all grandparents do but then you hear the news about the abuse some children suffer and it turns your stomach. Love those little ones, spoil them and enjoy them while they are young. God Bless Grandparents everywhere.

GOOD OLD FARFALLE FOR ME.

NATIONAL CHICKEN MONTH – Sometimes I can take chicken, sometimes I don't miss it at all. I have issues with chicken, for instance, I don’t like thick chicken breasts for chicken parm I like them thin and hammered down. Now a fried chicken breast is great being thick because you feel like one of Robin Hood’s Merry Men eating at a forest feast. Chicken tenders are good with the right spicy sauce to make your eyes water. Roe makes a great chicken dish using the tender thigh meat and my favorite macaroni Farfalle or Bow Tie pasta. She combines it with a nice creamy sauce some peas, other goodies and lots of love. Great dish Roe, make it soon. Now we can’t forget that all American favorite “CHICKEN SOUP.” Roe makes hers with shredded white meat different styles of noodles depending on her mood, carrots, that great broth with those special spices, so good on a winter’s night. So this month support our chicken farmers and enjoy some dishes featuring our fine feathered friends.

Welcome Back from the Weekend Speakies:

Hoping you all had a great Labor Day Weekend. To me Labor Day was officially the last day of summer fun. No more BBQ’s, picnics and of course the worst, “Back to School.” I can just hear the kiddies moaning and saying, “Mommy do I really have to go?” Yes my children be brave as you enter those hallowed halls of learning and soon you’ll have some kind of day off for something.

HOLIDAYS TODAY:

READ A BOOK DAY – Better yet read mine, go to Redlead Press listed on my blog and order some fine reading by Joey Z. So if you enjoy reading finish that book you started or dust off the one you never opened the first page to.

COFFEE ICE CREAM DAY – A pretty tasty flavor not one of my favorites but how would it taste melted down a little with some Kaluha as a topping. Try it and let me know.

PINK PANTHER DAY – Love those Pink Panther movies, my favorite one is “A Shot in the Dark.” I remember seeing that movie for the first time on a Saturday night when I was hanging out with my buddies the “Beatty St. Boys”, Tom, Lou and Richie. We walked downtown to the movies and I remember Lou and I laughing so hard we almost pissed our pants. Some things in life you never will forget and that was one of them. The original series of the Pink Panther films featuring the bungling French police detective Jacques Clouseau began in 1963 and starred the late Peter Sellers. The Pink Panther movies are a must to see for comedy and highly recommended by Joey Z.

WEEKEND WISHES ALL

Happy Friday Guys and Dolls:

It’s Friday and at the end of the day starts a 3-day weekend due to Labor Day on Monday. That means no writing for me on Monday. There are a few more holidays to celebrate over the weekend but let’s start with:

LABOR DAY – The first Labor Day in the US was observed on September 5, 1882, in Boston, by the Central Labor Union of New York. It became a federal holiday in 1894, following the death of a number of workers at the hands of the US military and US marshals during the Pullman Strike.

NEWS PAPER CARRIER’S DAY – How many of us were paper boys when we were younger? I know my Blog Buddy Mack was one and I substituted for a friend of mine when he went on vacation. So for all those who faced the weather elements and the early dawn hours we honor you this weekend.

CHEESE PIZZA DAY – I could talk about pizza all day, but from reading my blog you know I’m a fan of the Trenton Tomato Pie. DeLorenzo’s and Papa’s had the best but I could never forget the place that started me on the pizza craze Cassianni’s on Brunswick Ave. So in keeping up with the tradition everyone eats pizza this weekend.

SEPTEMBER SHE WILL COME

Good Morning Speakies:

Welcome to September Guys and Dolls, the month that features the beginning of the autumn season. Soon up North the trees will be changing to their colors of yellow and red and before you know it you’ll have to get that rake out and start piling them up. For those who have never seen the leaves change colors especially in the New England area it is a must see one day. Baseball season is nearing an end soon. Old Joey Z is rooting for his favorites the Phils to be in there fighting to the end. This is also the start of the Pro football season and most of the colleges too. By the way enjoy the music from the movie “COME SEPTEMBER” which starred Rock Hudson and Bobby Darin. If you ever have a chance watch it or rent it, one funny movie.

On this first day of September we celebrate:

CHESS DAY – The game of chess is a two player board game played on a chessboard, a square-checkered board with 64 squares arranged in an eight-by-eight grid. One of the world’s most popular games played at home, clubs, online, by e-mails and tournaments. I use to play chess but it has been years since Joey Z had his hand on the Queen. So if chess is your game play it today.

NATIONAL HUMMINGBIRD DAY – We have some hummingbirds around our house usually taking the nectar from our hibiscus plants. Like bees, they are able to assess the amount of sugar in the nectar they eat; they reject flower types that produce nectar that is less than 10% sugar. Humming birds also meet their needs for protein and other vitamins and minerals by preying on insects and spiders. If you ever have the chance to see one, don’t get too near but observe its motion and flight and if you can snap a picture.
