1991 - Natalie Schafer - Actress Gilligan's Island. You remember her as Eunice "Lovey" Wentworth Howell."
1992 - Sam Kinison - That loud mouth comedian. Loved him in the Rodney Dangerfield movie, "Back to School." SAY IT, SAY IT.

1953 - House of Wax was the first 3-D movie that premiered in New York City.

1962 - John Glenn was the first to orbit the Earth in Friendship 7.

WELCOME TO JANUARY 14, SPEAKIES
Hi Guys and Dolls:
Another Monday is before us now, but instead of complaining aren't you glad that you are not under the grass today. I know I am I want to walk on it today. Let's check out some history today and throw in some other stuff as well.
BIRTHDAYS TODAY:
1850 - Jan Mieczyslaw, a Polish Tenor. You know me I have to throw in Polaks when I can.
1875 - Albert Schweitzer - a great doctor and humanitarian.
1906 - William Bendix - a great actor in my eyes. He stared in the TV series back in the 1950's called the Life of Riley. He played man roles like Babe Ruth and my favorite war movie "Guadalcanal Diary." You will notice him in many films by watching TCM.
PASSED ON TODAY:
1961 - Humphrey Bogart, one of my favorite actors. There are a great number of movies I saw him in. Just to name a few, the tops to me were Casablanca, High Sierra, The Maltese Falcon and To Have and Have Not. There are too many to mention, just one great actor in general.
1977 - Peter Finch, actor from Network. If I'm right he won an Academy Award as best actor that year.
1986 - Actress Donna Reed, she starred in the Donna Reed Show on TV and played many great roles in movies. One of my favorites was From Here to Eternity.
STUFF TODAY:
1954 - Marilyn Monroe marries Joe DiMaggio, the great Yankee baseball player. When Roe and I lived in Trenton there was a corner bar and restaurant called Rossi's. When in town, Joe always stopped in for a burger. His pictures cover the wall, he was friends with Gill Rossi who played with the Washington Senators in the 50's. The burgers are great, not like those chain style burgers down here.
1956 - Little Richard released "Tuttie Fruitti." As old as he is he can still belt out the music.
Hey food lovers today is "Hot Pastrami Day." They look so good, but to be honest with you, I have never eaten one. One day I promise. That is it for today, enjoy and be careful out there.

REMEMBER THIS DAY OF INFAMY
GOOD MORNING GUYS AND DOLLS:

I GET EMOTIONAL WHEN I WATCH WAR MOVIES, I GUESS BECAUSE A LOT OF US GUYS WERE IN THE SERVICE. I SERVED IN THE VIETNAM WAR, THERE ARE STILL KOREAN VETS AND I EVEN MET A WORLD WAR II VET ON THE CRUISE WHO SERVED IN THE NAVY. ALL I ASK IS A MOMENT TO REMEMBER THOSE SOULS LOST THIS DATE AND MAY THEY NEVER BE FORGOTTEN AND MAY WE NEVER ENTER INTO ANOTHER COUNTRIES BATTLES. AMEN.
HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND.

A PENNY SAVED MEANT A LOT

GOOD MORNING GUYS AND DOLLS:
A little fact of history for your grey matter today. To conserve copper during World War II, the US produced zinc-coated steel pennies. The copper saved was enough to meet the combined needs of 2 cruisers, 2 destroyers, 1,243 B-17's, 120 field guns, 120 howitzers or enough for 1.25 million ammunition shells.

I SCREAM, YOU SCREAM, WE ALL SCREAM FOR ICE CREAM

Happy Thursday Speakies:
Funny story the other day here in Florida from the great city of Pensacola. A convicted felon escaped from police custody however he was again apprehended in a Home Depot a mile away trying to find tools to break his handcuffs. Store officials thought he looked suspicious and called the police. Can we all say the word “BOOB?”
How about some interesting history facts for today, I know those little ones are getting ready for final exams so this is to sharpen up you brains to spread the knowledge I will provide to you. And away we go:
1777 – First ice cream advertisement in the NY Gazette. (Bet they only had vanilla).
1792 – Toilet that flushes itself at regular intervals is patented.

HISTORY HUMP DAY

Happy Hump Day Speakies:
I thought we would start the day off with a little history lesson just to keep you on your toes in case those kiddies pop-up with some questions. So let’s do a little one today:
Born Today:
Thomas Jefferson – Tommy was the 3’rd US President.
Frank W. Woolworth – That Five & Dime Store king. That was a fun place to go. You could buy clothes, sneakers, all kinds of things for household use, popcorn to snack on and they had that lunch counter that was always packed and the food was good.
Don Adams – Mr. Get Smart, the American version of Inspector Clouseau.
Paul Sorvino – Great actor, played Paulie in “Goodfellas.”
Tony Dow – The one and only Wally Cleaver, brother of the Beaver.
Kabaka of Bugunda – Means King of the Kingdom of Bugunda got that.
Passed on the Great Heights Today:
There was a batch of foreign composers and really no one else I knew so let them all rest in peace.
What Happened Today?
1741 – Dutch people protest the bad quality of bread. – Well you know it didn’t come wrapped.
1796 – 1’st elephant arrives in US from India. Question is what did they do with him or her and where did the elephant go?
1742 – George Handel’s “Messiah” performed for the first time.
1902 – JC Penney opens his 1’st store.
1912 – Royal Flying Corps is founded later becomes the British RAF.
1954 – Han Aaron’s 1’st game as a player for the Milwaukee Braves.
1961 – UN General Assembly condemns South Africa for apartheid, “Diplomatic Immunity Revoked.”
1970 – Apollo 13 says those famous words, “Houston, we’ve got a problem.” Well that’s enough history for today.
Today is also “SCRABBLE DAY”, that fun filled game of trying to make words on a board and have a higher score than anyone else. Roe and I played that game every weekend but haven’t in a while. Give it a try, builds your mind and keeps your smarts sharp. Have a great day and evening gang.

THANK YOU JOHNNY A.
Good Afternoon Speakies:
Who says history has to be boring, a good friend of mine Johnny A. sent me a little tid-bit that I’m passing on to you readers.
There is an old hotel/pub in Marble Arch, London England which used to have gallows adjacent. Prisoners were taken to the gallows (after a fair trial of course) to be hung. The horse drawn wagon carting the prisoner was accompanied by an armed guard, who would stop the wagon outside the pub and ask the prisoner if he would like “ONE LAST DRINK.” If he said YES it was referred to as “ONE FOR THE ROAD.” If he declined, that prisoner was “ON THE WAGON.” So there you go!

A little more history. They used to use urine to tan animal skins, so families used to all pee in a pot and then once a day it was taken and sold to the tannery. If you had to do this to survive you were “PISS POOR.” But worse than that were the really poor folk who couldn’t even afford to buy a pot. They “DIDN’T HAVE A POT TO PISS IN” and were the lowest of the low.

See history is not boring.

See history is not boring.

IT'S A DAY TO HONOR FOUR BRAVE MEN

Good Morning Guys and Dolls:
I always try to keep humor in my blog on a daily basis, however today I would like to honor four brave men. Four brave men to who gave up their own lives to save others, “The Four Chaplains.” These men all held the rank of lieutenant and were Methodist Reverend George L. Fox, Rabbi Alexander D. Goode, Roman Catholic Priest John P. Washington and Reformed Church in America Reverend Clark V. Poling. They were sailing on the USAT Dorchester a troop transport on February 3, 1943 when the ship was torpedoed by a German U-Boat in the North Atlantic. As the ship was sinking, the four chaplains calmed the frightened soldiers and sailors, aided in the evacuation of the ship and helped guide the wounded to safety. They even gave up their own life jackets.
A survivor quoted, “As I swam away from the ship, I looked back. The bow came up high and she slid under. The last thing I saw, the Four Chaplains were up there praying for the safety of the men. They had done everything they could. I did not see them again.”
On December 19, 1944, all four chaplains were awarded the Purple Heart and the Distinguished Service Cross. Hero’s come in all shapes and sizes may these men rest in peace always. This story was on the History Channel awhile back if you ever see it listed watch it.
Have a great day Speakies.

OUT OF THE MOUTH OF BABES
Good Morning Guys and Dolls:
Going through some of my old papers yesterday, I found excerpts that are actual answers given on history tests and in Sunday school quizzes by children between the 5th and 6th grade ages in a Midwest state. These are for real and I thought everyone could use a laugh today:
Read carefully for grammar, misplaced modifiers, and of course spelling!
Ancient Egypt was old. It was inhabited by gypsies and mummies who all wrote in hydraulics. They lived in the Sarah Dessert.
Moses led the Hebrew slaves to the Red Sea where they made unleavened bread, which is bread made without ingredients. Moses went up on Mount Cyanide to get the ten commandos. He died before he ever reached Canada but the commandos made it.
In the first Olympic Games, Greeks ran races, jumped, hurled biscuits and threw the java.
Julius Caesar extinguished himself on the battlefields of Gaul. The Ides of March murdered him because they thought he was going to be made king. Dying, he gasped out: “Same to you, Brutus.”
Romeo and Juliet are an example of a heroic couple. They lived in Italy. Romeo’s last wish was to be laid by Juliet but her father was having none of that that I’m sure. You know how Italian fathers are.
Writing at the same time as Shakespeare was Miguel Cervantes. He wrote Donkey Hotey.
Cyrus McCormick invented the McCormick raper, which did the work of a hundred men.
Louis Pasteur discovered a cure for rabbits but I don’t know why.
Karl Marx was one of the Marx Brothers. The other three were in movies. Karl made speeches and started revolutions. Someone in the family had to have a job, I guess.
Well there you go Speakies, hope you had a good laugh, now have a great day and if I don’t speak at you later a great evening.
