Luee

Luee
We adopted Luee from the Humane Society in 1996. He was 2 years old, but still a pup. He has slowed down a bit; his age is catching up to him. He is the best dog anyone could ever have. Luee had to be put to sleep on April 15, 2009. Rest in Peace Pup.

More Memories of My Neighborhood - The Bars

Bars, now I'm starting to remember some of the local taverns around my old neighborhood. We had Stanley's Tavern, Top Road Tavern, The Polish Falcons, Duffy's on Pine St., and Cappy's on Brunswick Ave. Mulberry Street had a number on bars that were always crowded due to the pottery workers in the area. I remember Stanley's Tavern opened up at 6:00 a.m. for those guys who wanted a shot and beer before work. On hot summer evenings, usually a Saturday, my Dad took Mom and me to the back ladies room of Stanley's, they drank a few brews and I had Coke in a beer glass with a bag of chips or a hot dog from Stanley's hot dog oven. Man in those days that was living.

When I came home on leave from the service my buddy Jack and I would go to Stanley's for a few beers. A long neck glass of beer was 25 cents a glass, and a five dollar bill went a long way for the both of us. Those days are gone, except in one's memory of what use to be. If anyone out there remembers some more taverns, please post your thoughts. Have a great day and thanks for stopping by.

I just spoke with someone from
North Trenton and they remembered:

"J&L Steakhouse,Jughead's Barber
Shop, Molina's Deli, Heil Avenue
Park, A Jack in The Box on Princeton Avenue near Dales.
The Pizza Place at Capitol Plaza
was Capitol Pizza owned by Tony
Bua."

Tony & Maria Bua are good folks :)

Jeff, I'll ask Mack for you. Mack if you read this and have time, please take a picture of the store on the corner of Revere and Liberty, my son Jeff says it was a candy store when we moved there and it became a toy store, what is it now. Thank Mack.

Mack, thanks, whenever you pass by. There was another good bakery on Olden Ave. near the Polish Falcons, called Eagle Bakery, Polish owned and the donuts were great.

Just remembered 2 more taverns in the area, Anchor Bar and Grill, cheap drinks, good burgers and old time and rough. Was a true Polish workers place. Mundy's Tavern was another roughneck place, police always there at night. Never had the pleasure of stepping inside.

How about Shorty's Tavern on Mulberry and Brunswick?

Friday, that old ceegar chomping geezer would turn out a great platter of fresh flounder. For an "appy" his snapper soup with a wee dash of sherry couldn't be beat. Old Shorty caught his own snapping turtles.

Oh boy, don't get me started on old places for food in North Trenton.

The best pie, hands down was Cashanni's right across from the old Brunswick Theater.

The "signature item" of the Eagle Bakery was the hot corn rye bread on Saturday morning.

Zefutti's (yep, same as downa' shore in Manahawkin), was across from Eagle and they made a good pie but, the big treat was the beer batter cod on Friday.

For ice cream, well nothing beat Greenwood Dairy (by Reedman Motors), but North Trenton locals had Arctic, Costa Cottage by Korvettes or out Olden a bit more was Breihler (sp?) ... or Buxton's.

Reminds me of Whitey's pie almost on the corner of Arctic and Olden, they were pretty good too.

The original Mike's Steak House by Helen Fuld Hospital ... later they moved to two locations, one was Olden and Rt 31 and the other was where Suburban Wrench is in Pennington.

Remember when RT 31 was RT 69?
