Good Morning Guys and Dolls:
Well I’m in my place with a sun shinny face (Yeah Right) good morning to you all. There is not one exciting thing happening around here right now. The sun is shining the weather should be nice and warm around the upper 70’s and I read NJ is getting ready for a three day winter storm. My thoughts go out to you guys up there, be careful on that ice.
I saw an article in the news today that the SAG Awards Show last night presented Ernest Borgnine with a “Life Time Achievement Award”, I’m glad they finally did he is 94 years old and a great actor what took them so long. I saw him in the Dirty Dozen the other night but it was ending near 1:00 a.m. and I was not about to stay up that long. One of my favorite movies was “Marty”; he played a great role and did receive an Oscar for his performance.
Like I said not much happening even regarding today’s holidays, however we are celebrating “NATIONAL BRUSSEL SPROUTS DAY” those little green leafy balls you hated as a kid. I was thinking of some of the foods I hated as a kid but like now. Today I like brussel sprouts not a lot but I like them. I also love spinach you could not get me to eat that when I was growing up but just call me Popeye today. I was never a fan of pork chops, lamb, pickled pigs feet and head cheese. Another thing I hate and that is Tofu it’s like eating a block of jellied fat. Here’s a sad true fact when I was a wee lad my parents use to go for a tomato pie at Cassianni’s across from the Brunswick Theater. Here is the strange part, I only liked the crust of the pie and finally learned to eat the rest of it about a year later and I’m glad I did they made a great tomato pie. Wheat germ and Granola Bars I consider those rabbit food, I’ll take a Nestles Crunch bar any day. I’m starting to get sarcastic and better say goodbye for now.
Have a great day and evening and you never know when JoeyZ might pop up.

Those two gals made the best pie in town. Big pots of sauce simmering and a reach in soda cooler.
My buddy and I would each get a sausage with extra cheese and I believe it was not much more than a dollar.
Regarding sprouts or little cabbages, as long as they had butter I could handle them.
Best pie in town and my Italian buddy Kenny, because I would always eat the center and save the crust if I had "room" would always say ... "that's the best part" .. well OK, I'll trade ya' my crusts for your center.
On nights when we were feeling rich we would have a soda drinking contest. I loved that place.
Up two concrete steps to heaven.

A man who knew a good pie when he tasted it. I never knew why they closed and what took over the building, was it a ice place or something like that. Help out Skip.
I'll have to ask about that one but when I came home from the service in the early 70's I believe it was gone.
I do remember that a plumbing supply moved in and later a barber and beauty shop? I am sure about the plumbing shop.
Gee, I noticed when I finally made it to Papa's the other day after all of the incentive from Mack's blog, I made the trip back just last Saturday. Sign in the doorway said "Long Haired Freaky People Needn't" ... oh, that was the song :) :)
The sign said "NO SLICES" and I wonder if that perhaps what put places like Cassianni's and the small "Mom & Pop" down for the count? It was about the same time that "Special Pizza City" and the one in Gino's opened up.
All fast food and the Italian equivalent of "Bun & Run".
Fast, fast, fast, everything is fast with no effort.
In Cassianni's there were only the two old gals with those big pots simmering away. The shock and horror of the first salseman who tried to get them to try canned sauce or pre-shredded cheese probably spent his weekend trying to dislodge it from God only knows where?
So much pride and quality and heart and soul went into each pie.
God bless those old timers and I feel sad for the generations who will never know,
Glad Roe is feeling better. Boy we sure don't bounce back like when we were 39 do we. That reminds me, I need to get Rochester to bring the Maxwell around.

Skip: I thought a husband and wife owned the place every time I remember going there I know a guy was in the back and the woman was in her 40's really nice. I think the name of that ice cream place was Afternoon Delight but it was across from Columbus School more. That's the one thing about Mom and Pop pizza places no slices take the rest of the pie home breakfast or lunch the next day.
