DID THE FAMED GROUND HOG PUNXSUTAWNEY PHIL SEE HIS SHADOW? THE ANSWER IS:
NO – SPRING WILL BE HERE SHORTLY FOR YOU SPEAKIES IN THE COLD COUNTRY. I THINK YOU’LL BE HAPPY ABOUT THAT.
Now for a little history lesson regarding Groundhog Day which is celebrated on February 2 in the US and in Canada. According to local folklore, if it is cloudy when the groundhog emerges from its burrow it means that winter will soon end. If it is sunny and the groundhog sees its shadow winter will continue for another six weeks. Enough for groundhogs today we have a week to enjoy another holiday celebration.
The first week of February is “PICKLE WEEK.” Those cucumbers that are transformed into those delicious treats we enjoy in a jar. I love pickles but Roe says no dice to our little Gherkin friends. If I open a pickle jar in the house the smell flies to her like the scent of a rabbit to a hound dog. I guess that’s why I don’t usually keep pickles in the house but I enjoy them dining out with a burger. There was this Jewish deli by my parent’s house called Lisook’s a little store, they carried groceries, fresh breads, rolls, lunch meats and they had that big pickle barrel with those fat Kosher Dills bobbing up like apples on Halloween. The smell of the garlic filled the store ah the smell and memories of pickles it brings to my taste buds. This celebration also includes peppers one can’t leave peppers out they go with pickles. Some of my favorite pickles and peppers are:
Gherkins – those little whole sweet pickles.
Kosher Dills – whole or sliced it doesn’t matter to me just put them on the dish.
Bread and Butter Pickles – good anytime for a treat usually of the side with a burger or dog.
Peppers – I love Pepperoncini those Greek peppers, sweet bell peppers green, yellow or red and those narrow sweet peppers, just split them open take out the seeds and start eating. I better stop, I might need a pickle fix shortly.
Have a wonderful day Guys and Dolls and thanks for stopping by JoeyZ’s Speakeasy where you are always welcome to make your comments known.

Now Skipper, run down to Lisook's and get two pickles and have Meyer pick them out, ask for them well done.
And remember that window filled with rolls and bagels? I loved the crescent with poppy seeds.
Joe, do you remember the Saint Anne shop? That was on Olden next to City Appliance right on the alley by the hobby shop.
I will admit to not exactly spending a lot of time in there.
It is hard to find a good Jewish dill anymore. I'm not much on the sweet pickles and such. The problem with us is that we were spoiled. Not much money but surrounded by great food. "Johnny" Bugdal's for baby calves liver, Eagle for corn rye, Servus for the walnut fingers or cream doughnuts or Zeffuti's for beer batter fish and chips. Oh, the horror of Lent without meat, having to have just a pie with extra cheese or that deep fried cod.
Lost power again last night in an ice storm so once again the "genny" paid off. I used to feel kind of smug when you "Southerners " got all uppity over the warm and balmy weather and think well we don't have bugs creeping and cralwing all over. No "palmetto' or huge cockroaches and such. Well now we have an influx of "stink bugs" and even in this weather they find their way in. They are about the size of an nickel and emit a chemical odor.
On Mack's blog they mentioned barber shops. Top Road is still hanging in there with Lenny in charge and Tony

I remember St. Anne's, never purchased too much from Bugdal's store. Lisook's was a regular stop, Shaffer's Cleaner's, Harbourt's Drug Store, Willet's was my favorite, Deal's Camera and all the bakeries of course. Did you live on Ellis Ave and know the Burkhalters, there was a guy who use to hang at Brunswick Drugs, Jack Shesko and his friend Richie can't remember the last name, he lived on Ellis Ave. too.
Though I saw Top Road Barbershop for sale on the Trentonian on line.
We lived down the "far end" towards Heil and almost right behind Servus bakery.
When Mr. Chebra was doing the baking at 4:00 in the morning it was such a treat to smell that bread.
I know the name Burkhalter a few years perhaps a few years older than I was. Walt Kimec was the only fellow my age towards the Spruce Street side.

Hi JoeZ & Skip:)
I like the pickle and coleslaw at Golden Dawn that come with a burger:)
Skip: Lou Burkhalter and his wife became our neighbors and friends when we lived on Revere Ave. Still in contact with them. Anything baking smells good.
Mack: Now that's what I call food fusion, cheeseburger meets fries, pickle and slaw.
