Luee

Luee
We adopted Luee from the Humane Society in 1996. He was 2 years old, but still a pup. He has slowed down a bit; his age is catching up to him. He is the best dog anyone could ever have. Luee had to be put to sleep on April 15, 2009. Rest in Peace Pup.

FOOTBALL, SODA AND PEANUT BUTTER

Happy Monday Morning Speakies:

Hoping you all had a great weekend and enjoyed the games if you are a football fan. At least one of my teams won the “Pack is Back”, after all they beat the Eagles and I had to root for them. I was hoping the Jets would win but the ghost of “Broadway” Joe Namath did not show up for this one. As I was watching the games and somewhat dozing off at times I remembered some of the classic games I watched as a kid and when I was growing up in life. Back on December 26, 1960, I remember a big snow storm had hit the area a day or two before and the championship game was held on a Monday afternoon at Franklin Field. I recall being glued to the TV set and watching that exciting 17 to 13 Eagle win over the Packers. My favorite Eagle players were Norm VanBrocklin, Chuck Bednarik, Tom Brookshire and Tommy McDonald. I also remember those great playoff games of the NY Giants and Baltimore Colts. I even remember watching that game when Chuck Bednarik of the Eagles flattened Frank Gifford of the Giants who did not get off the field without help. Great old games played outdoors in the freezing cold and snow that was football at its finest.

My blog buddy Mack had posted over the weekend about one of our favorite sodas we enjoyed growing up in Trenton. Good old Kern’s Soda, great flavors and taste and they came in returnable bottles. Us kids loved them because you brought the empties back and you got cash for soda or candy. During summer vacations besides playing ball hunting for bottles was a part-time job.

Today as far as food goes it’s “NATIONAL PEANUT BUTTER DAY.” I prefer smooth over crunchy but to tell you the truth I was never a big peanut butter sandwich type kid. I mean I had a few peanut butter and jelly sandwiches but at Mom’s house if I wanted a sandwich it was baloney or if you remember this one veal loaf, similar to baloney and very good. Now one of my favorite peanut butter treats is Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, love those, can’t have many but a couple a year crushes the craving. So if you are a big peanut butter fan go ahead and make that sandwich and celebrate the day like a kid again.

Have a great day Guys and Dolls and be careful out there.

Veal loaf or olive and pimento loaf.

Things that will sadly disappear.

Funny because a gal from Bergen County was all giddy the other day because she just discovered the "Jersey Breakfast Sandwich" and it had this stuff on it called Pork Roll.

She is in her 60's and was acting like she discovered the lost continent or something.

You mentioned pie the other day. I love pie and my kids think it's like honestly "weird" food. Never try to get between me and a pie and the only pie I have snubbed was last year when one of my wife's nutty friends tried to slide a home made apple pie made with that "Splenda" crap. I think she said "he will never know the difference", even the dog turned his nose at the stuff. Pumpkin, apple, peach or the best were my own blue berry and raspberry from the bushes in the yard.

Joe, when we were kids we paddled down the "Assumpink" by Lawrence Station to get the wild black berries for pies. There was nothing like it.

The true Jersey sandwich pork roll with brown spicy mustard and raw onion on a hard roll or burger roll. Pork roll and eggs for breakfast or as a sandwich. The only berries we picked were at the Farmers Market on Spruce St.
