Luee
We adopted Luee from the Humane Society in 1996. He was 2 years old, but still a pup. He has slowed down a bit; his age is catching up to him. He is the best dog anyone could ever have. Luee had to be put to sleep on April 15, 2009. Rest in Peace Pup.

WHAT A WEEKEND ALOHA

Good Monday Morning Speakies:

Hope you all had a great weekend and a wonderful start to a new Monday. This is Joey Z’s last day at work all except for my luncheon and exit interviews tomorrow. Right now my Count Down Clock reads 0 DAYS, 14 HOURS AND THE MINUTES AND SECONDS ARE FLYING BY. It truly is a strange feeling one of happiness and the other of a little sadness to say goodbye to the great people I worked with for 20 years, plus a fine organization.

Well Friday was one big surprise for me. At one time Roe wanted to have a Luau Party for some of our neighbors but it was on the back burner as far as I was concerned. After work on Friday I pull up in front of my house and behold there is a car taking my parking spot in the driveway not a good start when I have packages to bring in. I am walking up to the screen room when I noticed straw covering the door windows. I said to myself oh no not a party tonight! I entered the house and there is Roe snapping away pictures; suddenly from behind the wall out comes Joey G and his wife Kim, my best friend from Jersey. My mouth must have dropped a mile, what a surprise and a great job by Roe all these weeks to hide the beginning of a wonderful weekend. Saturday we did have a Luau Party and even my son, his wife and my grand kids came to celebrate. We had one party weekend lots of food, drink and friends to share it with.

I want to thank everyone for the fun, the memories I will always have and the wonderful gifts given. To Roe I want to say “I LOVE SO VERY MUCH” and thank you for planning such a great party and all that you do for me. Starting tomorrow it is my new full time job sharing time with you and enjoying life may the good Lord willing.  One more thing I better be good or I'll be packing for a part-time job.

HAVE A GREAT DAY GUYS AND DOLLS AND I WILL WRITE SOON.

WEEKEND WISHES

HAPPY FRIDAY SPEAKIES:

Joey Z’s last Friday at work and I wanted to stop by and wish you all a great Friday and a wonderful weekend filled with fun. Next week I’m going to be busy but I will try to post when I can so just bear with me until I do.

Just a few holidays to raise your glasses to today:

BUGS BUNNY DAY – I hated that rabbit, he was always annoying to me, give me that Daffy Duck any time.

TAKE YOUR HOUSE PLANTS FOR A WALK DAY – Do that and those guys with the white coats will be on you like fleas on a dog. Just give them the plant food and water they need to grow.

Got to run, have a great day and once again a fun weekend.

SOON JOEY Z IT WILL COME

Happy Thursday Guys and Dolls:

I’m getting psyched only two more days of work. Roe figured out why you get those feelings of anxiety about retiring. We look back on life and remember our parents retiring and now it is us, well like I wrote yesterday let us enjoy the benefits of our many years of labor. May we all share in good health, happiness, love and adventure.

Just checked the food holiday for today, it is one of my favorites, however a forbidden fruit for me now. How I hate to utter the words of this holiday for it is “NATIONAL CHILI DOG DAY.” A dog smothered with chili and chopped onions on a warm toasted bun with a side of baked beans truly a meal in itself. One of my fondest memories of dogs which does not include the chili variety was at Connie Mack Stadium in Philly. My dad and I loved watching those last place Phillies back in the late 1950‘s and early 1960’s and when that hot dog man came around I had to have one of those lukewarm dogs with a slap of yellow mustard on it. It was a taste you could not refuse.

Now-a-days there must be a variety of ways to dress up a chili dog, for me I like them the way I mentioned earlier for the rest of you Guys and Dolls have it your way. Thanks for stopping by, be careful out there and have a chili dog for me.

HELLO MADISON AVE. YOU NEED HELP

HAPPY HUMP DAY SPEAKIES:

I bet you did not think I would be back this soon, but I have a little time on my hands and thought I would do a fast post. 5 DAYS UNTIL RETIREMENT, to tell the truth it is a little scary knowing you don’t have to go to work anymore unless you become broke which only means saying “PAPER OR PLASTIC” or “WELCOME TO WALMART.” I pray for good health, happiness and time to enjoy and that’s all one can ask. I wish all you retired Guys and Dolls the same.

Last night I saw some more commercials that should feel the plug removed. First is a bunch of little leaguer’s celebrating at Dairy Queen or some place, next to them is sitting a group of bears hoisting up the coach. What is this a remake of the “Bad News Bears.” Which Madison Ave. advertising agency came up with this idea? Hey maybe I should pick out a new retired career as a commercial writer, may give it some thought.

Here is another winner, scene the basement, some 30ish year-old living with Mommy and Daddy is playing video games as the parents approach his domain. Proceeding down the steps they are concerned about his eating habits however this ACE responds advising them he is eating KFC chicken some things. Knowing this fact old Daddy responds “let’s leave the boy alone” to which junior answers “Good Talk Guys.” Your guess is as good as mine on this one.

I think I’m going after reality shows next after a few views last night. Have a great day and be careful out there and as always thanks for stopping by. Remember your comments are always welcome and if I don’t like them you are zapped.

GO BACK IN HISTORY AND LEARN

Happy Tuesday Guys and Dolls:

Things are a little slow this morning so, I thought I would do a little posting so you don’t stop coming around and reading old Joey Z. Let’s go back in history this date and see what happened, who if anyone I like was born and who is playing the harp or stroking coal.

BORN TODAY:

1898 – Amelia Earhart – Flew into the wild blue yonder and never returned. Still making news this morning on the ne.

1920 – Bella Abzug – Politician from NY, remember those big colorful hats she wore.

1936 – Ruth Buzzi – That Laugh-In lady. Her first national exposure came when she teamed up with Dom DeLuise in a comical magic act in which she plays his sidekick named "Shakuntala".

PASSED AWAY TODAY:

1966 – Montgomery Clift – Good actor died at age 45. Starred in “From Here to Eternity.”

1980 – Peter Seller – British comedian, loved those Pink Panther movies. “It was a Minkey.”

STUFF:

1847 – Brigham Young and his Mormon followers arrive in Salt Lake City, Utah. Corporate American begins – Hey I forgot that’s Mitt Romney’s hallowed ground.

1925 – Scopes found guilty of teaching evolution in Tennessee, fined $100 and court costs; gee they had court costs in those days too.

1948 – Soviets blockade of Berlin from the west. Airlift begins for relief.

1972 – Jigme Singye Wangchuk becomes King of Bhutan at age 16. Never heard of him.

And finally the thought of the day: “WE HANG THE PETTY THIEVES AND APPOINT THE GREAT ONES TO PUBLIC OFFICE.” How true are the words, my man George Carlin could not have said it better.

Have a great day Speakies.

BACK IN THE SADDLE AGAIN

Good Day Speakies:

Well its back to work this Monday for me and I'm taking it nice and slow.  Recovery from the hospital is not an easy task with all the new medicines and diet rules but I feel better and have to get ready for retirement next Tuesday.  I promise I will be writing again it may not be every day but I will keep you amuzed and well informed in the "Land of Joey Z's Speakeasy."

I have to throw in some sort of complaint today, while in the hospital you try to sleep and its always a wake up for something.  TV was not the greatest but it did pass the time.  Commercials ugh! here are some more to add to my hate list:

THE BUNDLE COMMERCIAL - EVERYONE HERE BUNDLES, PUPPY? PIE?  THIS COMMERCIAL BELONGS IN THE STEPFORD WIFE'S MOVIE.

THOSE PEOPLE SITTING ON BENCHES HAVING A SUBWAY LUNCH AND YOU CAN'T UNDERSTAND ONE WORD THEY ARE SAYING.  ALONG WITH THE SANDWICHES THEY SWALLOWED TOO MUCH HELIUM GAS.  FIND ANOTHER DIET NUT AND MAKE HIM OR HERE EAT SUBWAY SANDWICHES AND SHOW US THE RESULTS.

Well I have stuff to do, so have a great day and like I said I will be posting again soon.  Thanks for stopping by.

DON'T TOW ME AWAY, I'M A DORK TODAY

Good Monday Morning July 16, Speakies:

Hoping you all had a great weekend and are ready to start the brand new week. There is a holiday today we should all hate instead of celebrating and reason being it is “NATIONAL PARKING METER DAY.” Two gentlemen Holger George Thuesen and Gerald A. Hale designed the first working parking meter in 1935. They both were engineering professors at Oklahoma State and started the original work in 1933. The first installed parking meter was in Oklahoma City on July 16, 1935. Put your dime in and be back in time.

I missed some great holidays that were celebrated on Sunday, so if you don’t mind I’m going to list a few and poke some fun.

BE A DORK DAY – Aren’t we all at times, I find myself becoming one more and more each day. You can ask Roe on that one.

GUMMY WORM DAY – I love any type of gummy candy, worms, people, snails, fish regular flavor or sour. We had a kind of gummy candy back growing up you had the red half-dollars, licorice pipes even a box of Juicy Fruits could have been considered a gummy type candy.

WOODIE WAGON DAY – What kid did not have a wagon growing up? I may not have had a woodie one but I know I had one of those red wagons that lasted me years as a kid. That wagon was anything you wanted it to be, a fort, troop transport, racing car it was all up to your imagination.

Finally “COW APPRECIATION DAY” say thank you to all those cows for that wonderful drink called milk and don’t forget the cheese. It is also “NATIONAL ICE CREAM DAY”, so run down to your local ice cream shop and order your favorite to enjoy. Have a great day Guys and Dolls.

ZOMBIES, VAMPIRES AND FRIES

ZOMBIES ARE OUT TONIGHT SPEAKIES:

Welcome to Friday the 13th, the evening of watching those old time horror movies on the tube. Personally I prefer the old science fiction movies, like the Day the Earth Stood Still, Invaders from Mars, The Original Body Snatchers, This Island Earth and the rest of those B-movies from the late 50’s. So if you are checking your local TV listings and find your favorite, sit down on the couch, grab some chips or popcorn, shut the lights off and enjoy the show.

Today is also “GO WEST DAY.” The only things I can relate to this holiday are the words of American author Horace Greeley who favored westward expansion with his words of July 13, 1865, “GO WEST YOUNG MAN.” Greeley envisioned fertile farmland of the west as an ideal opportunity for people to work hard and succeed and escape the problems of the big cities of the East. So Wagons Ho everybody and let’s head West, I’m planning to stop my western move somewhere in the South Pacific on a nice, lush tropical island.

Here is a food favorite of many people today “FRENCH FRIES DAY.” Now Joey Z like his fries nice and thick not those skinny shoestring ones. Some of my favorite ones were on the boardwalk at Seaside Heights, NJ in that snow cone cup nice and hot, thick and loaded with salt. My grandmother made the best fries ever and I know I mentioned this many times. She had an old pot, filled it with oil, took baking potatoes cut them in quarters and dropped them in. I don’t know how she did it but those fries came out nice and crisp on the outside and soft and tender on the inside. For you fast food fries lovers try 5 Guys their fries are great and you get plenty of them.

Hey I forgot its Friday and I wish you all a great weekend, be careful, enjoy and I’ll see you soon at Joey Z’s.

JUST ASK THE LONELY

HAPPY HUMP DAY JULY 11 SPEAKIES:

Do you know someone who is lonely, needs a little cheer and sunshine today, well Guys and Dolls you can play an important part in that person’s life today. Today is “CHEER UP THE LONELY DAY.” Why not visit a relative or friend, maybe confined in bed or in a hospital and feeling down it would surely cheer them up and make you have that special warm feeling inside. When our dog Luee was alive Roe took him for a test to see if he qualified to be a “Cheer Dog.” Luee did not disappoint and passed the test with flying colors. Roe and he visited “Give the Kids the World Day” a retreat for terminally ill children and also various nursing homes. Roe said the look on the kid’s faces melted your heart as they played and petted Luee. The seniors in the nursing homes even lit up when they saw the various dogs pay them a visit. So if animals can bring that much cheer how about you.

July is “NATIONAL BAKED BEAN MONTH”, you know the old saying “Beans, beans the musical fruit the more you eat the more you toot.” When I was younger the only kind of baked beans I knew and liked was Campbell’s Pork and Beans or Stokely’s. Those other beans like navy, pinto never crossed my palate. Now there are so many varieties of baked beans it’s a hard choice to make if you are planning a cook-out. For me give me the plain pork and beans thank you.

Let’s finish off today with a few more NEW STATE MOTTOS:

MISSISSIPPI – COME AND FELL BETTER ABOUT YOUR OWN STATE.

MISSOURI – YOUR FEDERAL FLOOD RELIEF TAX DOLLARS AT WORK.

MONTANA – LAND OF THE BIG SKY, THE UNABOMBER, RIGHT-WING CRAZIES AND LITTLE ELSE.

NEBRASKA – ASK ABOUT OUR STATE MOTTO CONTEST.

NEVADA – HOOKERS AND POKER.

NEW HAMPSHIRE – GO AWAY AND LEAVE US ALONE. Well that’s all for today Guys and Dolls have a great day.

A PINA COLADA AND A BUZZ BUZZ

Happy July 10 Speakies:

Today is “FOX AND HOUND DAY”, the only Fox and Hound I know of is a British Pub that has great beer and excellent fish and chips. Let me give you the insight to the real Fox and Hound Day. It is a 1981 animated film owned by Walt Disney Productions. The film relates the story of two friends, a fox named Tod and a hound dog named Copper, who struggle to preserve their friendship despite all the social pressures that arise against them.

DON’T STEP ON A BEE DAY – If you do and are not wearing shoes it’s going to hurt and you will be jumping around until that stinger comes out. My slogan is “DON’T PISS OFF A BEE.”

For you frozen drink fans it is “PINA COLADA DAY.” A Pina Colada is a drink that you sip slowly or you’ll get a brain freeze. It is a refreshing drink and what’s more refreshing is drinking one on a tropical island on the beach or by the pool.

July is also “WATERMELON MONTH” that refreshing fruit that one usually finds at picnics sitting in that metal tub filled with ice and cold water getting it ready to hit and refresh our taste buds. Remember after taking a bite save those seeds in your mouth and have a seed spitting contest for distance. I personally prefer a seedless watermelon not having to worry about spitting out seeds. I remember someone telling me when I was a kid that if I swallowed the seeds a watermelon would grow in my stomach. At Disney World’s Epcot Countries, Mexico made a watermelon drink that was so refreshing it included the melon, the seeds and ice. SO GOOOOD, you can even add a little vodka for the kicker.

Well Guys and Dolls have a wonderful day, be careful out there as usual and give the ones you love a hug.

STAY COOL

HAPPY MONDAY JULY 9 GUYS AND DOLLS:

Are you all recovered from a great weekend and ready to start a brand new week? I sure hope so and I would like to give you a few chuckles to start your Monday off right. Yes it is more “NEW STATE MOTTOS.”

MAINE – WE’RE REALLY COLD, BUT WE HAVE CHEAP LOBSTER.

MARYLAND – IF YOU CAN DREAM IT, WE CAN TAX IT.

MASSACHUSETTS – OUR TAXES ARE LOWER THAN SWEDEN’S.

MICHIGAN – FIRST LINE OF DEFENSE FROM THE CANADIANS.

MINNESOTA – 10,000 LAKES AND 10,000,000,000,000 MOSQUITOS. MORE MOTTOS TO COME SHORTLY.

There is one holiday of note today “AIR CONDITIONING APPRECIATION DAY.” The air conditioner that great invention to give us relief from the heat in the summer. As a kid growing up we never had an air conditioner, Dad brought out the fans opened the windows and that was our air conditioning. I remember summers at my grandmothers after a long hot summer day, taking a nice bath (granny had no shower) and then covering my body in Ammon’s Medicated Powder to keep dry. Once you did all that you were ready to spend the evening on the prowl for the young dolls, the Beatty Street boys and I spent many a summer evening in that quest. That got away from the air conditioner concept but it was fun recalling those memories. Living in Florida now one can truly be grateful for the modern central air system.

It is also “Sugar Cookie Day” and like I always say if sugar cookies are a favorite of yours get out and get some. Have a wonderful day and a great evening. See you soon and stay cool.

IT'S THOSE LAZY HAZY DAYS OF SUMMER

Happy Friday July 6 Guys and Dolls:

Stopping by to wish you all my usual “Happy Weekend Wishes” along with fair weather, good friends, loving family, plenty to eat and drink. National Month holidays are plentiful in July so allow me to list a few today.

NATIONAL GET ALONG WITH YOUR EX MONTH – No thank you.

TAHITI AWARENESS MONTH – I’m aware I’d like to go there but probably never will. I read about these South Sea cruises and I can just close my eyes and imagine outrigger canoes coming to me with lovely Tahitian women bearing flowered leis to place around my neck and offering me a fresh Mai Tai to quench my thirst. Dream on Joey Z and I think shall.

NATIONAL PICNIC MONTH – Of course it is, all summer long is picnic time. Now-a-days people have BBQ’s in the backyard or poolside. You can share a romantic picnic with a picnic basket, some wine, cheese and bread or go for a burger at your favorite hangout. When I was little I remember my Dad belonged to the Catholic War Veterans and they held their annual picnic at the Armory Field in Lawrence Township, NJ. They had hot dogs, burgers, beer, soda, chips, pretzels and all the toppings you could think of. Being mostly Polish I forgot they also pulled out the Kielbasa for grilling. The men played horseshoes, the women sat around throwing the bull and we kids ran wild. Fun times, so there you go Speakies some monthly holidays to ponder. Once again have a great weekend and I’ll see you soon.

DAY O, DAY O TAKE ME AWAY TO ISLAND TOWN

Happy July 5 Speakies:

Hope all my Guys and Dolls had a great 4th of July, enjoyed all those steaks, burgers, chicken and dogs you ate to last the rest of the year. Some of you went to see your local fireworks display or turned your backyard into a blazing inferno. Whatever you did, hope you had a relaxing day off. Get this next holiday right after a day off today is "WORKAHOLICS DAY." These are my thoughts of a workaholic devoted to the job 24/7, no time to relax, no time for family fun, hoping for that next promotion, lots of stress and finally you drop dead. It is fine to be devoted to your work in my eyes but not to the point of sheer madness and obsession.

On a lighter note we celebrate “CARIBBEAN DAY.” The Caribbean is my favorite vacation destinations when Roe and I cruise. One of the prettiest ports to sail into is St. Thomas in the US Virgin Islands, its lagoon is like a half-moon filled with all kinds of private boats and yachts and even has seaplanes taking off and landing. You could stay all day on the ship’s deck and enjoy the traffic going in and out. Aruba is another favorite of ours; Roe and I spent our honeymoon there 34 years ago and returned two years ago to see a vast change in the island. We have been to many islands and each has a beauty of their own to enjoy. I’m glad we were able to pay them a visit.

Yesterday I missed “CAESAR SALAD DAY”, my favorite of all salads. The best has to be made table side and seeing all those fresh ingredients blended into the best salad ever to pass your taste buds. Today I have to mention we honor that great American favorite “FRIED CHICKEN DAY.” To Joey Z the best fried chicken has to be found in the small Mom and Pop restaurants down South. I watch the Food Channel and the chicken fried in those little restaurants will make your mouth water. I’ll take a nice meat filled chicken breast anytime to munch on. So for you chicken lovers out there this is your day to indulge.

And this from a Jersey grown boy please note this first week in July is “BE NICE TO JERSEY WEEK.” No more of those what exit to you live off of jokes. I love living in Florida but Jersey has the tomato pies, great ethnic foods, the shore, the boardwalks, great fresh and saltwater fishing, camping, state parks and many other great things to offer. Make any more fun it is “BADDA BING, BADDA BOOM TO YOU.” Have a great day and as always be careful out there.

HAPPY 4TH OF JULY

HAPPY 4TH OF JULY SPEAKIES:

I can smell the steaks, burgers and dogs cooking on the grills across America today as we celebrate our country’s independence in the good old American tradition. There will be parades, speeches and fireworks galore all to remind us we are the land of the free. The Statue of Liberty standing tall in New York Harbor still bears the words on her pedestal written my Emma Lazarus.

“GIVE ME YOUR TIRED, YOUR POOR, YOUR HUDDLED MASSES YEARNING TO BREATHE FREE. THE WRETCHED REFUSE OF YOU TEAMMING SHORE. SEND THESE, THE HOMELESS, TEMPEST-TOSSED TO ME; I LIFT MY LAMP BESIDE THE GOLDEN DOOR.”

These words were seen by the masses of Poles, Italians, Jews, Germans, Irish and all the other nationalities that came to our shores in search of freedom. I think somewhere along the line we lost the meaning of those words. The hatred and prejudice now seen towards others seeking freedom is like a burning ember continuing to grow and being fueled by the prejudice we saw arise many times in this country. How can we say we are the land of the free? Is freedom only for the chosen or is it for all mankind? Those are my thoughts on this day of celebration think about your feelings and decide if you believe in those words above or not.

Enjoy the day my readers and may we have many days of freedom to pursue all the liberties we celebrate this day. HAPPY 4TH OF JULY GUYS AND DOLLS.

BOZO OF THE SUMMER SO FAR

HELLO SPEAKIES:

HERE IS THE BOZO OF THE SUMMER SO FAR IN CENTRAL FLORIDA.  A DOCTOR FROM ITALY WAS VISITING A LOCAL THEME PARK AND WAS ARRESTED FOR KICKING HIS 3-YEAR OLD SON WHO WAS SITTING IN A STROLLER.  THIS NIMYO DID NOT KICK HIM IN THE FOOT BUT DIRECTLY IN THE FACE CAUSING THE CHILD TO SUFFER FROM CUTS NEAR HIS EYE AND SWELLING OF THE ENTIRE FACE.

THIS IDIOT WAS ARRESTED AND CHARGED WITH CHILD ABUSE BUT HAS BONDED OUT OF JAIL.  I WOULD PUT THIS BOZO ON THE FIRST THING TO LEAVE FLORIDA AND NEVER RETURN.  STUFF LIKE THIS MAKES ME SICK.

MIRROR, MIRROR ON THE WALL

WELCOME TO JULY GUYS AND DOLL:

Well Guys and Dolls we are in the new month of July 2012. Joey Z is proud to announce he has only 29 more days until retirement and I can’t believe the time has flown by since I started my countdown last year. Let us forget the sentimental stuff and start right into the July holidays and see what we can raise our mugs to.

Today is “I Forgot Day” – I forgot yesterday’s holidays too, like Popeye’s Birthday, Vitamins Day and even Sunglasses Day. Oh well we’ll have to catch them next year on the Joey Z Go-Around.

Tomorrow you can raise your glasses to Air Conditioning Appreciation Day, Be Nice to Your Mirror Day (You better observe that one or the worm will turn on you). It is also American Redneck Day and Stay Out of the Sun Day to name a few.

Once again as last week, I have some personal matters to attend tomorrow and will not be posting on my Blog but as always you are welcome to visit and write a comment. I will not forget the 4th of July and will write a short little piece for all to read.

Now for some food and drink observances and they are favorites of mine. National Anisette Day and I’m not talking the spices and the beans I mean that great Italian liqueur that one sips after a good meal, you know the one that warms your tummy. I will be back talking holidays, other stuff and of course food and drink. July looks like a great month for discussion. I now leave you with a few more new state mottos:

Iowa – We Do Amazing Things With Corn.

Kansas – First Of The Rectangle States.

Kentucky – Five Million People; Fifteen Last Names.

Louisiana – We’re Not All Drunken Cajun Wackos, But That’s Our Tourism Campaign. No offense to any state just a little poke of fun. Have a GREAT DAY.
