Good Day Speakies:
Happy Hump Day Gang. Today is "National Milk Chocolate Day", so grab a piece of that chocolate candy or whatever you like that comes in that chocolate flavor and enjoy it. I use to be crazy about ice cold chocolate milk and probably still am, I just haven't had chocolate milk in years but I did notice some in the break room refrigerator at work today in those small little cartons. HMMMM !
I'd like to wish a Happy Birthday to any of my Speakies celebrating theirs today, so have a great day and enjoy your birthday and eat your cake, hey it might even be chocolate.
I've had fun writing about my memories growing up in North Trenton and at my grandmothers in South Trenton. When I was in high school, there was a small hole in the wall drug store called "Brunswick Drugs." It was across the street from my parents house and it became a hang out for a bunch of us guys. The entry was very narrow with a telephone booth on the left hand side, a soda fountain set-up and cigarette, cigar etc area on the right hand side. If you walked back there was the pharmacist's location, to me it always looked like a pawn shop window with all the supplies stacked around the store. A great and funny guy named Charlie worked part-time at the soda fountain, he also made deliveries in a Chevy Corvair that we all rode in if the boss wasn't around. The drug store fountain became our hang out in the evenings and we just shot the bull, smoking cigs, calling the babes on the phone and crowding the aisle. Charlie made some great sodas and ice cream dishes. Our favorites were the flavored cokes, mine was a vanilla coke and when you walked in Charlie had it ready for you. What service for a dime. I'm trying to remember the guys who hung out there. There was Jack, Rich, even Charlie when he wasn't working, Butchie and I know a few other guys. I remember at times we would all hop in Rich's car and head downtown where everyone made a loop driving around and seeing who they could pick-up. Rich was a good looking guy and never seemed to have problems. We had lots of laughs and fun, a good memory.
I guess if you ever watched Happy Days on TV, I guess Brunswick Drugs was our Happy Day hang out growing up. Have a great day Guys and Dolls and be careful out there.

Joe, you don't have to post this since I'm going to shoot from the hip and there will indeed be holes and yes I cherish the memory of the old Brunswick Drug, the wooden phone booth and my miracle tonic was the cherry coke. Squirt, squirt and schzzzzzzzzz. An honest soda, behold the true nectars of the Gods!
Starting north toward St. Hedwigs and BTW killer good honest Polish food can be found at Polonia across from Columbus School. I am going to try to get them to make some "kapusta galushka", sour cream, cabbage and noodles. There other stuff is excellent.
Post Office, MY favorite Cashianni's Tomato Pies, Royal Cleaners, Mercer Savings, Shorty's Tavern (Friday for flounder and a bowl of snapper soup), Brunswick Sports (Joe & wife Ronnie), Ray Chapliki's Tavern, Amoco & Brunswick Auto, Colonial Liquors, Food Fair, Stanley's Tavern, D'Agastino Mens Wear (once Buster Brown Shoes), other corner I forget, Schaffer Cleaners, Dr. Charles Smith OD, Willets (Mr. Erskine with the cigar and son Howard who looked like a tall Crane or Stork. Snuggled in the side on Olden was Willet's.
Bank, Dr. Kazoir DDS, Winowicz Funeral and my favorite bakery Servus. Now the little things you described were "walnut lady fingers" and were they good. Three Chebra sons were Jackie, Ron (my age 61) and Eugene.
Other side and headed north
Some big tool and die that later became a Trenton Sportsware, Kowalski Funeral, St, Hedwigs, City Line Appliance, Mundy's (my cousin but I forget the old name), Lisook's Deli with all the Kramer rolls and bagels in the window for Sunday picking in big bags, Dominicks Shoe Repair, Lillian's Dress Shop, Deals Camera, Dr, Franzoni, Harbourt's Pharmacy now Scott Taylor who had the first phone in Trenton (Dial #1), Hardware on the corner, Acme Market, Brunswick Drug, Top Road Tavern and the Engine #9 then Little Saint Michaels, Columbus School, St, Andrews Episcopal, polish name insurance co, Top Road Barber, Brunswick Theater and then what is a Top Road Barber, now a Chinese Restaurant and last Mercer Realtors Association.
Wow, that was from memory but I missed a bunch.
Eagle just closed but that is OK, they didn't have the corn rye anymore and only spoke Polish like many of the places now. My Polish is so bad.
A few at random .. at Saint Hedwig's recess there was the Pietras Market on Indiana and Heil. He had us nailed down with those ropes across the street.
The other place with the models and candy was Wozniak (Vosz-nayk's)
Joe Reither's garage at Spruce and Princeton always had a 1955 Corvette on the rear corner lift way in the back. Never for sale but it was there till at least 1980.
Get a tiger in your tank and one of those horrible tiger tails at Buckley's Esso on Princeton and Olden? Old man Buckley had a cool 51 Chevy dark green panel truck, about the same as Ritzy Foods on Heil.
I remember in 1966/67 when they were renting genuine Shelby GT 350-H's at Hertz on Heil.
All that walking around has me tired. Sorry if your feet hurt?
Skip .. and thanks for this stuff, between you and Mac it's mostly forgotten.
Joe, I started a "stroll" at the Circle Branch of the USPS and we walked down to Servus, had a walnut lady finger, rented a Shelby GT 350-H at Hertz on Heil to drive back but, after all that, I got flagged for too long a post.
Me? All tuckered out so I'll take a few short walks tomorrow after I rest.
Skip
Thanks Skip once again this is going to make for good memories further.
