TOMATO PIE LOVERS, TONIGHT IS THE TONIGHT

Hello Trenton NJ Tomato Pie Lovers,

Yesterday, I sent e-mails out to my friends regarding "Trenton Tomato Lovers."  There is a new s show on the  Cooking Channel called "Pizza Guz."  Tonight at 9:00 p.m. the cousins visit and dine at Papa's Tomato Pies on Chambers Street.  Roe and I enjoyed delivery pies from there and they were great.  We only lived a few blocks away and delivery did not take long.  Papa's started making pies in 1902 and still are going strong.  So if you are a true tomato pie lover, watch it tonight.

BEST PIZZA SO FAR TO ME

Hi Speakies,

Just wanted to tell you Roe and I enjoy pizza, but miss the old Tomato Pies and Sicilian Pies from Trenton, NJ.  We did find two places we like, one is Brooklyn Pizza in Winter Park, FL and the other is Leo's in Kissimmee.  I prefer Leo's over Brooklyn's.  Leo's is loaded with sauce and makes a great crunch when you fold it.  When my sons come over we order the pepperoni and the sausage to go.

Last night Roe made her own square tomato pie.  It was a little thinner than Nino's original pies back in Trenton, but the flavors, crust, tomatoes and cheese kicked ass.  Thanks Babe for a great pie.  She even had some for breakfast this morning.  Just had to report this.  I'm now looking for a great homemade macaroni made by my mother-in-law with some sausage Roe has going on the stove.  Enjoy your dinner, I know I will.

SICILIAN PIZZA DREAMS

Rosemary and I have been discussing Sicilian Pizza all week long. Last Sunday we tried a pizza place in Clermont, Florida. Roe being the bold one of the family walked right in and asked him if he made the best pizza in Clermont, now of course his answer was yes. The two began the talk about making us a Sicilian pie. The pie man said he was originally from Brooklyn and knew about a grandmother pie. Now a true Sicilian pizza is made with the good mozzarella cheese placed over the dough first allowing it to melt into the dough, than the sweet tomato sauce and topped with Romano cheese. My mouth was watering so we ordered one.

Sitting there in anticipation sipping our soda and ice tea, thinking “Are we really going to have a true Sicilian pie?” Out it came looking good and smelling great. Have to admit the pie was light; sauce was good not as sweet as the ones in Jersey. The crust had a nice crunch and the anchovies made the topping special. It passed our test but we still will be in search of the perfect Sicilian pie in Florida. Back in Jersey the best Sicilian pie was at Nino’s Pizzeria in Trenton, NJ on Chambers Street, also the home of the best cheese steak and fries.

BOARDWALK TOMATO PIE

Hi Speakies:

I'm always talking about Trenton, NJ tomatoe pies, well this place started in Trenton, NJ and I remember going there many at times as a teenager. They later opened a stand on the boardwalk in Seaside Heights, NJ. The place is Marucca's Tomato Pies and it is a legend at the shore. If you ever visit Seaside Heights, stop in for a slice of true heaven. I'm posting a picture of a slice of their pie. To my sons feast your eyes and remember.

MY MOUTH WAS WATERING

Good Morning Speakies:

Received an e-mail this morning, I had my first visitor from Ireland to my blog yesterday, so “Welcome Ireland.” No important observances to mention today. The weather has turned here in Florida, highs maybe reaching 70. It is cloudy and breezy, and looks like a winter snow day from up North.

One of my favorite shows is one called Man Versus Food on the Travel Station. Last night’s visit was to Brooklyn, NY; Adam visited L & B Spumoni Gardens an Italian pizza restaurant. They are famous for their square pie, which is actually a pie we call Sicilian Pizza. Most pizza in Florida is made with tons of cheese causing the pie to be dry with hardly any sauce. There have been only a few places that actually made a pie similar to those in Jersey. Now this square pie started with the dough, a layer of Mozzarella cheese than the sauce and topped with good grated cheese and oil olive. Our mouths were watering last night. So to my readers if you are ever in Brooklyn, stop by L & B Spumoni Gardens and give it a try, the place has been around for 70 years.

Guys and Dolls: I've been telling you about the restaurants down here in Central Florida, but for my readers heading up north and if you are near Trenton, NJ here is the pizza place for you. Now we call it Tomato Pie, not pizza and the place is DeLorenzo's on Hamilton Ave. and the other is DeLorenzo's on Hudson St. both located in Trenton, NJ. Just ask anyone, they will give you directions. DeLorenzo's also opened a new place in Hamilton Township and has a website so check it out. I'm posting a picture of DeLorenzo's on Hamilton Ave., the picture is a courtesy from Mack. If you are from the Trenton area check out his blogsite, it's listed on the ones I follow on my main page, make it yours too.

Another favorite tomato pie place is on Brunswick Ave., called Top Road Tavern, good pie, everything on the menu is fresh.

YOUR FAVORITE TOMATO PIE OR PIZZA JOINT

I want to try something with this new post. I'm starting to get hits on my site from all over the good old USA. I know most people like pizza or where I come from in Jersey we call it tomato pie. Readers, I want you to list your favorite pizza place and location and maybe a brief description of what makes it special. I figure if any of you visit one of cities listed, you can stop in for a pie. What do you have to lose, just a few minutes of your time. I'm going to list this post under the heading of Pizza/Tomato Pies and feel free to add to it at any time.
