Luee

Luee
We adopted Luee from the Humane Society in 1996. He was 2 years old, but still a pup. He has slowed down a bit; his age is catching up to him. He is the best dog anyone could ever have. Luee had to be put to sleep on April 15, 2009. Rest in Peace Pup.

WEEKEND WISHES

Happy Friday Speakies:

I can’t believe the last Friday in March is here, where did this month go? I guess that old saying is true time flies. We have some good holidays to celebrate this last weekend in March so with my little extra comments here we go.

NO HOMEWORK DAY – To all you teachers out there I don’t want to hear my little Speakies complaining they received homework over the weekend. Weekends are to rest minds and bodies. So no homework please.

TAKE A WALK IN THE PARK DAY – If you live near a park have at it. A nice refreshing walk, a little rest on the park bench, maybe feeding the ducks if there are any but just have fun and relax.

ORANGE AND LEMONS DAY – Good old citrus fruit, you can eat them, cut them up for cocktails, or use some as cleaning agents. I found out a good use for the rinds of oranges and lemons, put them down the garbage disposal in your sink, add cold water and hit that button until they are ground up. Every time after that you use your disposal you will smell the orange or lemon fragrance for about a week.

NATIONAL HOT DOG DAY – The day we honor that wiener we all love to eat. What American doesn’t love the hot dog; little kids love them cut up or on a bun and Joey Z loves that Italian hot dog with the potatoes and peppers on that good Italian torpedo roll. Well any way you like your frank have one this weekend.

Whatever you do this weekend enjoy and be careful out there.

I WANT MY CORNER STORE

Happy Thursday Guys and Dolls:

Should I hit you with a study lesson for those little ones who ask you what happen this day in history Daddy or give you a break until next week? Take a break because Spring break is in full swing down here and little ones from all over are running wild. There are a few holidays we can talk about today.

Vietnam Veterans Day – Stop and take a brief moment to remember all those who served and gave their lives and add a little prayer. I was in the service at that time and I remember my friends who were there and some I never saw again.

Love Your Children Day – We don’t need a special day for that, love your children every day and tell them you love them and hold them tight. They grow too fast but never forget they are your children and never too old for a hug and kiss.

Mom and Pop Business Owners Day – To me gone is the true age of quality products and service with a sincere smile. Mom and Pop businesses are far and few between anymore. The large chain stores, restaurants and markets have forced the closure of many of these small businesses. Let’s bring back some good old memories and I’m sure you had your share too. There was this little grocery store near my grandmother’s house when I was growing up called Leslie’s. I remember going there to pick-up food items for granny and handing Leslie a book in which he wrote down the items and amount. Granny would see him at the end of the week and settle the score, try to do that in this day and age. How about those little family owned restaurants or deli’s remember those places. Now try to get a decent hoagie, some lunch meat or rolls even baked goods on a Saturday or Sunday morning. Yes Joey Z does miss Mom and Pop stores so if you are lucky to still have them in your neighborhood, stop by and wish them a happy holiday.

I better get off my band wagon and say good-bye. Have a great day and as always be safe out there.

NO MORE STICKS FOR ME TODAY

Happy Hump Day Guys and Dolls:

SOMETHING ON A STICK DAY – Could this holiday refer to food only or anything on a stick? Our mission is to see if we can name things on a stick, either to eat, play with or just on a stick because that’s the way it is. I think eating will have the vast majority so here goes my list.

Ice Popsicles – a kid favorite.

Fudgsicles – my favorite one on a stick

Creamsicles - #2 favorite ice cream bar on a stick.

Corn Dogs – never ate one, I like mine on a bun with the works.

Shrimp on a skewer – hey it’s like a stick in fact the ones I have home are made of wood.

Roasting marshmallows on a stick – let the campers have those.

Kebobs on a stick – yes a little tender beef, onion, tomato and green pepper will do fine for me.

Lollypops – never a big fan of those things.

Hors d’oeuvres – comes with tooth picks to make it easier to eat.

Fondue foods – there’s another variety of dipping food I’ve never tried to eat. My brain is running out of something on a stick things. Fans are made with handles or a stick. I’m ending this right now, I’m sick about things on a stick so I’m leaving you Speakies to give me some more ideas.

Have a great day and a wonderful evening.

EVERYONE IS A JOE

GOOD AFTERNOON JOES:

Yes, today everyone even the Dolls are named JOE today. Dolls just tell them your name is Josephine and you are called Joe for short. It is “NATIONAL JOE DAY” across land and everyone should have fun going along with this. Actually I think we are honoring the name Joe that everyone uses. For example we have Joe Blow, Joe Camel, GI Joe, Joe Cool and my favorite a Cup of Joe. Now if you are a real Joe double the celebration today and let all have a ???????

A CUP OF JOE

PAELLA AND COUNTRY; DON'T GET ANY BETTER

It’s Spanish Paella Day Speakies:

Paella is something I’m going to try one day, call it one of my Bucket List Food items. Paella is a Valencian rice dish that originated in Valencia on the east coast of Spain. The most famous I’ve ever seen is the seafood paella. The key ingredients are various seafood, calasparra or bomba rice’s, saffron and olive oil. The closes American seafood dish would be cioppino which includes shrimp, fish, various shellfish and specifically Dungeness crab along with garlic and tomatoes. Sounds good to me also another Bucket List Food to try.

Now for one of my favorite holidays, “GOOFY COUNTRY SONG TITILES” and away we go and these are real.

BILLY BROKE MY HEART AT WALGREENS AND I CRIED ALL THE WAY TO SEARS.

DON’T CHOP ANY WOOD MOTHER; I’M COMING HOME WITH A LOAD.

GET OFF THE TABLE MABEL, THE TWO DOLLARS IS FOR THE BEER.

HOLD ON TO YOUR MEN, SHE’S SINGLE AGAIN.

HOW CAN I MISS YOU IF YOU WON’T GO AWAY?

I FELL FOR HER, SHE FELL FOR HIM AND HE FELL FOR ME.

I WANT A BEER AS COLD AS MY EX-WIFE’S HEART.

I WISH I WERE IN DIXIE TONIGHT, BUT SHE’S OUT OF TOWN.

I’M THE ONLY HELL MOMMA EVER RAISED.

JESUS LOVES ME BUT HE CAN’T STAND YOU.

MAKE ME LATE FOR WORK TODAY.

MOMMY, CAN I STILL CALL HIM DADDY?

RED NECKS, WHITE SOCKS AND BLUE RIBBON BEER.

SHE BROKE MY HEART, I BROKE HER JAW.

LAST BUT NOT LEAST – WOULD JESUS WEAR A ROLEX ON HIS TELEVISION SHOW?

Those are for real Guys and dolls hope you had a good laugh we will do this again soon. Have a great day and be careful out there.

ITS GREAT TO BE POLISH DAY

Well Another Monday Speakies:

Welcome back from the weekend and I hope it was a good one for all you Guys and Dolls. Today is “Make Up Your Own Holiday” so each of you can celebrate whatever you like. Maybe I’ll make mine “ITS GREAT TO BE POLISH DAY.” That’s it every March 26 on this blog will now be “ITS GREAT TO BE POLISH DAY.” We’ll have a polka playing on MixPod in fact we will start that right now as you are reading this. Everyone is to feast on Polish cuisines and take a few shots of Spiritus to warm the cockles of your heart and put you in that Polka dancing mood. Don’t worry I probably will forget about this holiday next year but I want someone out there to remind me prior to March 26. So Speakies start deciding on your own holiday today and get the celebration started.

I forgot a food holiday over the weekend; it was “National Chocolate Covered Raisins Day.” I remember them as Raisinets those chocolate covered raisin delights we all enjoyed as a kid at the movies. They are still being made to enjoy and Roe usually picks a few boxes of them up at the Dollar Tree Store when she is planning a trip to the movies. Speaking of movie candy do you remember the different kinds of candies they sold at the concession stand? Let me see what I can remember: Necco Wafers, Jujubes (I always called them tooth stickers), Jujyfruits, Goobers Chocolate covered peanuts, Chocolate covered Bon-Bon ice creams in a box, Dots, those Junior Mints and I’m sure there were plenty more to enjoy. If you remember any post a comment please.

Well that’s it for today, hope you all have a pleasant day and evening. If you want to celebrate my holiday today have at it and eat some chocolate covered raisins too.

WEEKEND WISHES

Hey Speakies It’s Friday:

Stopping by for a quick hello to wish you all a great weekend. Lots of college basketball on again this weekend so enjoy it fans. Let’s toast some holidays we celebrate this weekend:

CHIP AND DIP DAY – This baby we celebrate today. I love my chips and dip. Good old ruffle style chips and onion dip are Joey Z’s favorite. When I dip my chip believe me it’s covered in dip not just a little dip on the tip.

For those of you in San Francisco the Cable Car is celebrating its birthday today. Its National Family Day so get out there and do some family stuff. Now for my favorite “National Sleep Day” I think I’ll spend a few hours on my favorite chair this weekend with the eyes closed and the breeze blowing over my body. Have a great day and a wonderful weekend.

OOPS THERE GOES MY LUNCH

Happy Thursday Guys and Dolls:

Hope old Joey Z is finding everyone in a bright and happy mood this morning and I wish you all a great day. Some fun things to celebrate today and of course I’ll throw my two cents in of remarks so let’s get started with those holidays.

ROLLER COASTER DAY – Personally never a big fan of coasters, I don’t like heights that much but I’ve ridden a few roller coasters in my time. Now my son is a roller coaster freak, loves them and so does Roe. There was a great special on roller coasters on the Travel Channel a year ago and I’m sure it will be shown again now that spring is here. If you are a coaster fan don’t miss it.

GOOF- OFF DAY – My kind of holiday, unfortunately with work calling I am not blessed to celebrate this holiday with some of you. So for you goofers out there this is your day have fun.

FEEL YOUNG DAY – To me some days you feel young some days you don’t. As the old saying goes “Getting Old Sucks.” To the Speakies my age I know at times it’s hard to feel young but we must try and get that old feeling back. I think I’ll give it a try later today if not I’ll collapse in my easy chair and dream about younger days.

BADMINTON DAY – That cute little racquet and shuttlecock set that adores many a backyard in the summer is celebrated today. Who plays badminton you ask? Don’t hide it we all played that game when we were younger and even some of us now. In fact I see Bobby and Randy and Sally and Sue playing it now on the lawn of that Palm Beach home. You have to admit it’s a fun game to play and not as exhausting as tennis. So this summer go out and buy a set and teach the little ones how to play and enjoy a nice family game after dinner.

Have a great evening Guys and Dolls and be careful out there.

I'D LOVE TO TANGO WITH YOU

What Day is It Guys and Dolls?

Oh Yes! It is Wednesday also called Hump Day, why the question you ask? Today we celebrate “MEMORY DAY” that thing we really don’t want to lose because then people want to start putting you away. So keep your memory sharp, I know Roe is always telling me that and maybe that’s the reason I write my Blog and I’m going to try and stay busy when I retire. So Speakies grab a hobby, read, and do crossword puzzles, fish or whatever to keep your brain sharp as a tack.

NATIONAL DANCE DAY – This is a holiday for Roe to celebrate, that girl was born a dancer and my granddaughter is following in her footsteps. Roe can learn a dance by just watching a few steps, adding her own moves and she just goes with the beat all day long. Back in Jersey she danced at the Trenton Catholic dances and other dances as a teenager. We still get together once in a while and dance across the household floor. Thanks Honey for all those dancing moments we shared and all I can say is Babe you got rhythm keep on shaking that thing.

AGRICULTURE DAY – Let’s all give a big hoot and toot to all those farmers today. Those Guys and Dolls who provide us with all those vegetables, fruits, dairy products and all those great things we enjoy having to eat. God Bless them all.

Food wise today it is “FRENCH BREAD DAY” that crispy bread that makes for a good sandwich or perhaps with a little piece of cheese and a fine glass of wine on a picnic with a Doll by your side. Our favorite way to enjoy French bread is with some thin sliced rare roast beef, some Au Jus with onions creating a great tasting French Dip Sandwich. There’s an idea for your lunch or dinner today. Speaking of today have a great one and be careful out there.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO THE BEST LITTLE GUY

HAPPY BIRTHDAY IAN:

HAPPY BIRTHDAY HONEY FROM GRANDMOM AND POP-POP. GUESS WHO CAME ALONG TO WISH YOU A HAPPY BIRTHDAY TOO WOODY AND BUZZ. HAVE A FUN DAY WE LOVE YOU VERY MUCH.

WINTER IS OVER; SPRING HAS ARRIVED

Spring Has Sprung Speakies:

Well Guys and Dolls it’s March 20 and today is the first day of Spring. May sunshine warm your face and blue birds of happiness sing at your window, how about them words Speakies. Let’s all hope Spring is kind weather wise to all of us without the severe weather.

Today is “Act Happy Day” so I suggest we all put on our happy faces and shock the people who call us grouches today. Just be happy today and every day and enjoy life with the ones you love. Here’s a little idea make up one of those cardboard faces with a big smile on it and walk around.

National Proposal Day – You know what that means Guys, D-Day has arrived. For all my Guys who are still debating about proposing to that Doll they love and want to marry here is a day to really surprise her. Buff up that diamond, get down on that knee tonight and say those words she wants to hear, “Will You Marry Me” than get ready to grovel while she makes her decision. Good Luck Guys.

Happy Birthday in Heaven today to that great PBS Children’s TV Host, Mr. Rogers. One great children’s show I remember watching it many times and I wasn’t even a kid.

For all you macaroni or pasta lovers out there today is “NATIONAL RAVIOLI DAY.” I remember my first ravioli was Chef Boyardee in a can. Ravioli is one of my favorite dishes either in a red sauce or pesto. Make one coming dinner a ravioli night and with that my goodnight to all of you.

FOR ALL YOU JOSEPH'S OUT THERE

Happy Monday, March 19 Speakies:

First of all to you Guys out there named Joseph and who are knowledgeable about the Saints of the Catholic Church today is St. Joseph’s Day. Being a Joseph myself I wish you all a very Happy Patron Saint Day and may the blessings of St. Joseph be with you all. Hope all my Guys and Dolls had a great weekend and did not put down too much booze over St. Paddy’s Day. Lots of college basketball played this past weekend and I hoped your teams moved on.

Today is “POULTRY DAY” and I say, I say that means chickens, turkeys, ducks and geese. Farmed raised poultry means the providing of meat and eggs for human consumption. Let’s give a hearty round of thanks to those poultry raising farmers that provide the food we eat.

“LET’S LAUGH DAY” is today so let’s get laughing up a storm and bring smiles and joy to the world. Yeah likely that’s really going to happen, but if we each laugh among the friends or co-workers we are around today I thing we all will have a good feeling inside. Give it a try.

Finally today the Cliff Swallows make their return to the Mission at San Juan Capistrano in California. The swallow is a migratory bird that spends its winters in Goya, Argentina and makes the 6,000 mile journey north every spring time. According to legend the birds have visited San Juan Capistrano for centuries; due to the fact an innkeeper destroyed their nests. The mission is located between two rivers and there is always a large supply of insects on which the birds feed and the mission itself offers protection to the young birds. Have a great and safe Monday and don't forget to laugh.

LOVE THOSE STOOGES

HELLO SPEAKIES:  FOUND THIS GREAT 3 STOOGES CLIP, LOVE THESE GUYS AND HOPE YOU ENJOY THIS ONE.  HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND.

DOWN PERISCOPE

Happy Friday Guys and Dolls:

Just stopping by to make a quick hello and wish you all a great weekend. This weekend not only do we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day but March 17 is a day to celebrate “SUBMARINE DAY.” I remember going to the Submarine Races by the river on Lamberton St. in Trenton on many a lovely evening. For those of you who read my blog and are from Trenton you caught the drift of that statement for the others I will explain. Lamberton St. was a long peaceful tree-lined road with the Delaware River flowing by. No matter if it was a cold winter’s night or a warm summer’s eve love was in the air with soft music that could be heard at times. Lamberton St. was Trenton’s Lover’s Lane and as far as the eyes could see cars lined the curb with silhouettes embracing each other. Writing brings back the fond memories and delights I experienced as a young man and warms my heart once again.

You know I can’t pass up a food holiday; March is “Hamburger and Pickle Month.” I like them both now the only time I had them together on a sandwich was at McDonald’s or one of those other fast food joints. Usually when I order a burger out the pickle is on the side. Never put pickles near Roe or you will be cursed and driven out to barren lands. I like all pickles, Jewish Kosher whole or sliced those little sweet pickle slices, regular slice pickles any kind of pickle will do. So grab a burger with some pickles this weekend and enjoy. Be careful out there and have a great weekend.

THE IDES OF MARCH

Happy Ides of March Day Speakies:

Before we go into the Ides of March it is “INCREDIBLE KIDS DAY.” To me all kids are incredible when they are born; it is our responsibility as parents to keep that incredibility flame burning by guiding them to do the right things in life. Roe and I have two incredible sons whom we are very proud of and two lovely grandchildren who are being raised by great parents. So for all you parents out there, keep that in mind each day.

“BEWARE THE IDES OF MARCH CAESAR.” Now for a little history lesson; the word Ides comes from the Latin word Idus which means half division in regards to a month. The word Ides was used for the 15th day of the months of March, May, July and October. The Ides of March was a holiday honoring the Roman God Mars. It is best known as the date on which Julius Caesar was murdered in the Roman Senate by a group of back stabbers led by Marcus Brutus and Gaius Cassius Longinus. According to Plutarch an ancient Greek historian who later became a Roman citizen tells a story of Caesar meeting a seer on his way to the Theatre of Pompey. The seer had foreseen that Caesar would be harmed not later than the Ides of March and as Caesar passed he joked to the seer that “The Ides of March have come”, to which the seer replied “Ay, Caesar; but not gone.” A little seer saying from Joey Z, “The Day Ain't Over Till the Fat Lady Sings” So there you go Speakies a little insight to the Ides of March.

For you Foodie Speakies today if “Pears Helene Day.” A dessert composed of poached pears in sugar syrup, topped with vanilla ice cream, chocolate sauce and sliced almonds. Sounds good if I ever see it on a menu, I may give it a try. Enough for the Ides of March day. Have a wonderful one and a great evening.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY MOM

I WANTED TO WRITE A SPECIAL BIRTHDAY POST TO MY MOM UP ABOVE.

"HAPPY BIRTHDAY MOM" LOVE AND MISS YOU, THANK YOU FOR EVERYTHING YOU DID FOR ME, ROE AND THE BOYS.

BUTTERFLIES AND SPIDERS GET AWAY FROM MY CHIPS

Happy Hump Day Speakies:

Good Morning Gang, it’s half-time for the week that good old Wednesday that means the weekend is approaching. There is a lesson to be learned today and that it butterflies because it is “LEARN ABOUT BUTTERFLIES DAY." A butterfly is a day flying insect of the Order Lepidoptera which also includes moths. To me butterflies are beautiful insects to watch in flight and on flowers and that’s my finish to this holiday.

SAVE A SPIDER DAY – I know there are good and bad spiders and we have our share here in Florida. Here’s my rule if they are in my house their dead; outside have fun boys but if you come near me I’ll zap you. That’s how Joey Z celebrates this holiday.

Now for my favorite holiday we are celebrating today “NATIONAL POTATO CHIP DAY.” I’m also speaking for my daughter-in-law Elizabeth who is also a chip freak like me. Any verification needed you can send a comment to Roe and she will verify this fact is true. You name the chips and I like them Plain, BBQ, Cape Cod Style, Shrimp flavored by Utz, Sour Cream and Onion and the list can go on. My son’s friend sent him potato chips from Japan, don’t know what they said on the package but they were very good but I don’t want to know the flavor or the source. One of the best chips ever was Charles Chips that came in a can and delivered to your home. Wise also produced a good tasting chip and was the favorite potato chip eaten growing up in Trenton. Whatever you’re favorite chips are have some today and let’s honor that great American snack. Have a great day Speakies and I’ll see you soon.

WHERE ARE YOU JOE BAZOOKA

Happy Tuesday Guys and Dolls:

I was checking out the weekly holidays for this official second week in March and there are some that deserve the old Joey Z comments. So away we go.

BUBBLE GUM WEEK – When I was a kid there was only one you chewed and that was BAZOOKA starring Bazooka Joe. Bazooka was first started shortly after World War II in the US by the Topps Company; you know they made gum also for those Topps Baseball Cards. The character “Bazooka Joe” appeared in 1953 as a comic strip included with the gum, there were 50 different wrappers to collect. Now we have Double Bubble, Hubba Bubble and Bubblicous.

OLDER PERSONS EMPLOYMENT WEEK – This one is for those who are retired or planning to retire. If you were in a great position one can always have their own business as a consultant, big bucks in that job. Maybe open that little side business you always wanted to start. Now comes the part-time jobs for us slobs that need some extra cash. Saying paper or plastic at your local grocery store, an official greeter at Wal-Mart, working at a theme park collecting tickets or giving directions and the best one to be is a baby sitter for your grandkids.

PULMONARY REHAB WEEK – I smoked for over 40 years and I can’t stress this enough, first help your lungs by quit smoking, believe me it damages your lungs. I know, I have COPD but thank God I just had a checkup and there are no signs of cancer but at times I do lose my breath and it’s difficult to walk distances. KEEP YOUR LUNGS HEALTHY AND QUIT TODAY IF NOT FOR YOU FOR YOUR FAMILY WHO LOVES YOU.

Have a great day Guys and Dolls and be good to each other.

SCOUTS AND SCALLOPS RULE THE DAY

Good Monday Morning Guys and Dolls:

Today we honor a fine association the Girl Scouts. Yes officially it is Girl Scout Week and today is “NATIONAL GIRL SCOUT DAY.” Don’t you just love those cookies, our favorite is the thin mints, but I personally like them all, so if you see the girls selling them today buy a few boxes and keep a great organization going. The Girl Scouts was founded by Juliette Gordon Low in 1912 after she met Robert Baden-Powell, the founder of Scouting. Upon returning to Georgia she started the Girl Scouts. The Scouts help teach values such as honesty, fairness, compassion, character, fairness and much more. While learning these values of life the girls earn badges while also acquiring other practical daily skills. Hats off to a fine organization from Joey Z’s Speakeasy.

What would be a day without talking food and it is a good one today, I love them and I know Roe goes crazy for them. “NATIONAL BAKED SCALLOPS DAY” is here and I could really go for some today but I don’t think it’s in the stars right now. Sea Scallops or Bay Scallops will do anytime, but I do prefer the larger of which I believe are Bay Scallops. You don’t have to wrap my scallops in bacon or even mix them with cheese or fancy sauce just pile them on a plate with some melted butter in a bowl and leave, Joey Z will take care of the rest. If you are in the mood for seafood today or a nice dinner after work make it a scallop night and do it right.

Being it’s a Monday I’ll let you get started working and enjoying your day. Have fun and be careful out there.

CRAB IT'S WHAT'S FOR DINNER THIS WEEKEND

HAPPY FRIDAY AND WEEKEND WISHES SPEAKIES:

Stopping by as usual to wish you all a great Friday and the same for the weekend. Lots of holidays to celebrate today and the weekend so let’s get started and as usual comments by Joey Z.

PANIC DAY – We can always start another “War of the Worlds” broadcast like in 1938 by Orson Welles. I think there is too much panic in the US these days, less panic the better.

NAME TAG DAY – My first name tag was when I was born, the second in Kindergarten with Joey on it, the next one was 17 years later in the service. You’re born with a tag and you go out with a tag.

EMPLOYEE APPRECIATION DAY – For those of us, who are appreciated, thanks for the day.

Happy Birthday to Barbie Dolls today born in 1959. What a rich doll.

Last but not least “CRABMEAT DAY.” Crab only second to Lobster as one of Joey Z’s favorite seafood’s. I’ve eaten crab meat already shelled, King Crab legs but never enjoyed a real crab feast with the newspaper on the table, hammers and just making a mess. Most of the cruise ships offer specialty dining and once I had a choice of ordering Joe’s Stone Crabs imported from Miami or a steak, dumb me I chose steak, but one day I will have my Stone Crab. So for all you Seafood Speakies get out there this weekend and chow down those crabs. Have a great weekend and be careful out there.

AUNTS, FLOWERS AND CLUSTERS

Happy Thursday Guys and Dolls:

Here we are and it is already March 8 and I guess I can truly say time is Marching along. Today is "AUNT DAY" those loveable sisters of your parents whom you either love or hate. To me there were two kinds of aunts the fussy and the cool. I had both in my years of growing up. Being Polish even your parent’s aunts you officially called aunt so there were plenty of aunts running around. All my parent’s sisters have passed away but I do have a special aunt I would love to hear from one day. We’ve lost touch since I moved to Florida and she and my uncle were my favorite. Hope you read this one day Aunt Louise and post a comment. So if you have any aunts still alive give them a call and wish them a “Happy Aunt Day.”

PLANT A FLOWER is happening today. I love flowers and have a little bed devoted to my granddaughter. I have to get started soon with some new flowers, mulch and a fresh spread of rich planting soil. One of my favorite flowers is the Purslane which blooms every spring even though they look dead in the winter. The picture posted is what the flower looks like. Try planting some, they spread like crazy and are beautiful flowers. You can grow them in pots or just plant some in the earth and watch them take off.

For my foodies out there today is “PEANUT CLUSTER DAY.” Personally I’m not a cluster fan of anything. I like chocolate and peanuts but by themselves. Speaking of peanuts I’m getting in the mood for some boiled peanuts. We had them at work several years ago and I really acquired a taste for them. I have to put a plea out for someone to boil a batch.

Have a great day and a wonderful evening, stay safe and be good.

THE NAME GAME

Happy Hump Day Speakies:

Abbe, Babur, Dagobert and Fabron, what does this mean? That’s easy for it is "UNIQUE NAME DAY” and those are boys names picked at random by Joey Z. I thought about a little fun with some boys names that begin in Z being I’m a Joey Z. So here’s a few to have some fun with and if they are your names tough.

ZEFIRINO – Means Wind of Spring. To me it sounds like a bottle of sparkling water or wine.

ZDENEK – Strong. Could be a character like in one of those Conan movies.

ZEMAR – Meaning Lion, good enough I’ll go with the lion.

ZENOA- An evil planet that is planning to take over Earth.  Could be a planet of pleasure too.

ZERO – It is a Greek name meaning seed. Don’t want to poke fun at the Greeks on this one.

ZIV – Meaning very bright. I haven’t heard this said in a long time, “Boy that kid Ziv is very bright.”

ZOLT – Means chief. To me Zolt sounds like the evil leader from the planet Zenoa planning to conquer Earth.

ZOMBAR –Refers to buffalo. Okay by me now we have Zombar “The Buffalo Boy.”

ZOWIE – Just ask the question how are you today? My name is Zowie and I’m feeling just Zowie today. Boy that’s enough of this stuff for today.

It is also “NATIONAL BE HEARD DAY”, so for those who want to speak their piece today is the day to do and be heard.

Happy Tuesday Speakies:

Well it’s March 6, 2012 and Happy Birthday and Happy Anniversary to all my Guys and Dolls celebrating theirs today. Let’s see what other famous bozo’s alive or dead celebrate their birthday today:

1785 – Karol Kazimierz Kurpinski – Good old Polish composer.

1831 – Philip Henry Sheridan – Yankee General he just kept on marching.

1906 – Lou Costello – Famous half of Abbott and Costello, Hey Abbott. I had a nun in 3rd grade as my teacher who was my mother’s teacher and also taught Lou Costello, no lie. Sister Gabriella at St. Hedwig’s.

1923 – Ed McMahon – Here’s Johnny.

1937 – Merle Haggard – Country Singer.

1951 – Stedman Graham – Oprah’s main squeeze.

1959 – Tom Arnold – To me the world’s worst comedian.

Let’s Say Good Bye To Those Who Left Our Earth Today:

1836 – Davy Crockett – Killed at the Battle of the Alamo, maybe, maybe not, great History Channel Special on that theory.

1932 – John Philip Sousa – US composer.

1933 – Anton J. Cermak – Chicago Mayor bumped off by one of the Chicago gangs.

1973 – Pearl Buck – Author “The Good Earth.”

1976 – “Slapsie” Maxie Rosenbloom – Boxing champion.

1981 – Klaus Grabowski – I like this one “Child Molester”, shot by a parent.
There’s a little info for your brains today.
For you Foodie Speakies today is CHOCOLATE CHEESE CAKE DAY.” Sounds good to me, love cheese cake not in big portions to rich but I do enjoy it when it is served. Have a great Tuesday and be careful out there.

DOODLE, DOODLE, DOODLE ALL DAY

Happy Monday Morning Guys and Dolls:

Another Monday is upon us Speakies but have no fear for today is “CHEESE DOODLE DAY.” Yes Cheese Doodles those crunchy, cheesy, orange treats of delight that taste so good and get you in trouble for leaving orange crumbs on everything you touch. Those words still echo in my head today from mom “Joey, are you eating those things again, clean up the crumbs and wash your fingers.” I like Cheese Doodles both the regular and the crispy crunchy ones, love the way they snap when you bite into one and the lingering cheese taste that remains after you down them. Roe likes the crunchy ones and the white cheese flavored. So to all you Cheese Doodle fans today is the day get those quarters out and raid the snack machines at work or hit the local stores and buy the big bag. Enjoy tonight with the Doodles and the one you love.

Here’s a monthly celebration I never heard of “NATIONAL FEMININE IMPROVEMENT MONTH.” Seems to me women don’t need improvement physically they are fine the way they are, I like women for what they are creatures of beauty no matter what shape, looks as long as they are not crazy. Improvement should be up to them personally whether it is physical, educational or just anything they want to improve themselves as a person. Ladies of the world have at it the month belongs to you.

In this first full week of March we also celebrate Autograph Collecting Month. Back in the 1980’s I was out of work for several months due to a disability and with my sons being in grammar school, I started a sports autograph collection for them and I guess for the old man too. I started by writing to different teams and requesting team logo material and with some of the teams you would not believe what they sent me. Pens, key chains, cards, and schedules you name it. I then started to find addresses of various players and wrote to them personally. I have a great collection and something I’m still proud of but also from the looks and excitement I saw in my son’s eyes when the mail came each day. Have a great day.

WEEKEND WISHES SPEAKIES

Happy First Friday in March Speakies:

Weekend wishes are here from Joey Z along with some great weekend celebrations. So let’s get started with some of the ones I picked up to raise a pint to.

SILLY PUTTY’S BIRTHDAY – I loved that stuff when I was a kid, bounced it all around the floor, made copies of the comics on it and stretched that sucker as far as I could. I say get some Silly Putty and play today.

A couple of birthday wishes go out today to Elmer Fudd and Porky Pig those loveable cartoon characters who came out in 1937 to make us laugh.

SALES PERSON DAY – I worked in sales for a number of years but my idea of salesmanship was never to be pushy. I can’t stand pushy sales people, especially car salesman or those door to door duds. We have a no solicitation rule where we live however once in a great while a slime ball sneaks through the cracks. Last year two guys were walking up the driveway and started their spiel when I responded in Polish confusing the heck out of them and later came my Polish curse words in a loud tone and off they went, only later to be arrested for bilking senior citizens.

HUG A SOLDIER DAY – If you know one give them a hug if not grab one in public and shock the hell out of him or her, just like that famous WWII photo taken at Times Square in NYC.

Finally for food “NATIONAL POUND CAKE DAY.” Pound cake is one of my favorite cakes but it has to be moist and I don’t care what kind, white, yellow, chocolate or marble as long as it’s moist. Well Guys and Dolls have a great weekend and be careful out there and be good to each other.

OINK OINK DAY

Happy March 1st Speakies:

Let’s see what we can celebrate of this first day of March 2012.

GO BOWLING DAY – For all you Guys and Dolls that are in league play today you are all set. For the rest of my Speakies, if you have nothing to do today or this evening how about some bowling. I first started bowling when I was in grammar school at the Polish Falcon Lanes on Olden Ave. They had a Saturday morning junior league and the place only had 4 lanes with pin boys yet. I bowled in high school and on several leagues in the Trenton area. Roe and I use to love bowling on a Saturday night when they had Midnight Bowling and you could win cash prizes when certain pins came up in different positions. Bowling is a fun game so go out sometimes and enjoy a few.

SHARE A SMILE DAY – There is something we need more of and I’m just as guilty as anyone else. Why be a grump put on a smile make yourself happy and those around you.

NATIONAL PIG DAY – I guess we honor the old porker today or do we honor ourselves for pigging out? I think it’s the Porky Pig himself we pay tribute to today. Have to say thanks for all that good BBQ meat that the pig provides. Pigs include the domestic pig, the wild boar and other relative. Pigs are highly social and intelligent animals. So there you have some background about Mr. or Mrs. Pig.

For you food lovers it’s “PEANUT BUTTER DAY.” Peanut butter best known for half of that famous sandwich Peanut Butter and Jelly loved by millions. I was never a big fan of peanut butter but I sure do like those Tasty Kake Peanut butter cakes that came 3 to a pack. Funny Bones was another great peanut butter and cake snack food. So today the world is coming up peanut butter go out and get your favorites and enjoy. Have a great day and evening gang. See you tomorrow.
