Luee
We adopted Luee from the Humane Society in 1996. He was 2 years old, but still a pup. He has slowed down a bit; his age is catching up to him. He is the best dog anyone could ever have. Luee had to be put to sleep on April 15, 2009. Rest in Peace Pup.

THE DAY HAS COME; THE PACZKI ARE HERE

Good Morning Speakies:

Well Monday is here again, grab your coffee, give that last yawn and start your day off with a little enthusiasm if you can. Hope you all had a great weekend. NOW TO MAKE THE BIG ANNOUNCEMENT: TODAY IS “PACZKI DAY.”

Paczki are a traditional Polish pastry or to me similar to a cream filled or jelly donut. By the way when I was real little I called them “Punchski.” The Polish pronunciation could also be “Paczek.” A paczki is a deep fried piece of dough shaped into a flattened sphere. They are made from rich dough containing eggs, fats, sugar and milk. They can be filled with cream, various jellies, fruit fillings, even glazed or as my grandmother did just covered in powder sugar. They were light and airy and I would attack them as soon as they cooled a little. They were great for breakfast or a snack with coffee or milk. I really do miss granny’s cooking and baking. Most of her recipes went with her to heaven so she must be cooking up a storm there. In the US cities that have large Polish communities like Chicago, Detroit, Buffalo and Cleveland “Paczki Day”, is celebrated on the day before Ash Wednesday, some cities even hold parades. I can see it now just like Mardi Gras paczki being tossed off of floats into the crowds who are screaming for more. I can just see the cream, jelly and fruit filling all over the faces of the adoring fans of paczki. I’m proud to be Polish and write about the things I remember growing up, the food, the traditions and the love of my family. So if you are Polish or not go out and find a paczki and treat yourself to something really tasty.

Here’s something that starts to frost me and say “What’s the matter with people these days.” I read a news article about some guy in San Francisco that wants to ban circumcisions on baby boys. First banning French Fries in Frisco and now circumcisions aren’t there more important things in this world and life to be concerned about. This is going to bring on a JoeyZ tirade on the issues we should face instead of the ones some village idiots come up with. BEWARE GUYS AND DOLLS, GET’S MY GANDER IS RETURNING SOON. Have a great day.

IT'S COMING MONDAY

BE PREPARED FOR PACZKI.

MORE AND MORE PLATES AND I DON'T MEAN CHINA

Top of the Morning to you Guys and Dolls:

Thursday is upon us and we all know what tomorrow brings that great day of work FRIDAY. I was checking something out yesterday driving home all the different specialty license plates they have in Florida. I wear glasses but could not even make out the writing on the plate on the car in front of me it looked like a modern art painting with words and numbers. I did a little research last night and checked out the number of different plates Florida has, there must be an excess of 75 specialty plates you can order. I thought it would be fun to list those available and then add some JoeyZ would like to see made available to the residents of the Sunshine State. Here are some current winners:

PROTECT FLORIDA WHALES

SAVE WILD FLORIDA – WHO THE ANIMALS, THE ENVIRONMENT OR THE CRAZIES THAT LIVE HERE

TREES ARE COOL – I LIKE TREES, THEY ARE OUR FRIENDS

LET'S HEAR IT FOR THE MARINES AND POLAKS TODAY

Happy Hump Day Once Again Speakies:

Well the work week is half over and the sun is shining bright in Central Florida with temps to reach the 80’s today with a nice breeze, my kind of day. I would like to wish all my Guys and Dolls who are celebrating a birthday or an anniversary to have a wonderful day, and enjoy it with the ones you love. I found a few birthdays today to poke some fun at so let’s see who we have:

Lady Digby – haven’t got a clue who she is and really don’t care.

Peter Fonda – that Easy Rider guy.

Lord Ezra – probably Lady Digby’s husband.

Fred Biletnikoff – wide receiver from the Oakland Raiders. This one is for you Mack (Mack’s favorite team is the Raiders.)

Naruhito – crown prince of Japan, fuki yaki saki want some seafood.

Stuff That Happened Today:

1836 – The Alamo is besieged by Santa Anna. The boys hold out for days before falling to a better fate.

1846 – Polish revolutionaries march on Krakow, but are knocked down. The Polaks gave it a gallant try.

1945 – US Marines raise flag on Iwo Jima, famous photo taken on second flag raising.

1960 – Demolition begins on Brooklyn’s Ebbets Field. Them Bums should have never left Brooklyn.

I talk about things that piss me off and I have to let you know about the most recent. For weeks now as I leave work I take a nice new road light traffic, two lanes with bike lanes on the right. Each day there are about 10 to 15 cyclists with their pretty little shorts, bike rider shirts and those alien looking helmets. Instead of using the bike lane they ride in the slow lane three deep. I wish I had one of those boxing gloves on a loaded spring like they had in the old Our Gang films. I would mount about three on my passenger side and blast them as I ride by. Oh well enough for today, have a great Hump Day and be careful out there.

PANCHO SAYS READ AND DRINK

Happy Tuesday Guys and Dolls:

Hope you all had an enjoyable evening filled with relaxation after that Monday work day we love so much. Roe and I had an enjoyable Saturday evening dinner with our neighbors at a very nice Italian restaurant called Pazza Luna. The veal parm was excellent that made the dinner and the company made the evening complete. The weather looks good for the coming week so if you are planning a visit Mother Nature plans to be kind to you tourists.

This week is “READ ME WEEK.” Pick up that book you always wanted to start reading and dive right in. AHEM, AHEM remember I wrote a book and all the details are listed on my home page. I think you would enjoy it.

Today is also “MARGARITA DAY” that concoction that was blended in Old Mexico anywhere from the 1930’s to the 1950’s as various stories claim. The actual truth is that it was blended by a distant relative of mine Jose Z working in a small bar in San Lupe, Mexico. Now the margarita is a cocktail consisting of tequila mixed with triple sec and either lime or lemon juice and served with salt on the rim of the glass. You can have your margarita frozen, shaken not stirred served straight up or on the rocks. I only had a couple of margarita but they are good at a Mexican restaurant or on a cruise. If you are visiting Central Florida there is a nice Mexican restaurant called Cantina Laredo and I believe there are several across the US. Some of the young ladies I work with told me that on Thursday nights they have a nice help yourself buffet, all the margaritas, Mexican beers and wines you can drink for $20 per person and they call it Ladies Night Out. Sounds like a good deal so if you’re here visiting and enjoy Mexican cuisine give it a try. I’m still searching for that Tomato Pie which I now believe will be Roe’s homemade pie but our quest will still go forward on the roadways of Florida.

Spring Break will be coming soon and the area will be filled with tourists young and old and a few village idiots thrown in the pot to make life interesting once again. You will have to drive like you are in the Daytona 500 watching every move the outsiders make around you plus the local yokels who are always here like perennial flies in the ointment. Enough heard from me today, have a great day and evening and I will see you soon.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TOM

MAKING A QUICK SECOND STOP HERE TODAY TO WISH MY COUSIN TOM AND MY OLD BEATTY STREET BUDDY "A VERY HAPPY BIRTHDAY WITH MANY MORE TO COME. STOLAT TOM."

COURTESY ALONG WITH THE KING'S ENGLISH

Good Monday Morning Gang:

How about that a new little change in my greeting to you all. I hope everyone had a great weekend filled with lots of fun and adventure. I would like to post my thanks to my good neighbor George for helping me pressure wash our house on Saturday. The weather here has been very nice, sunny and highs near 80 degrees. Now I’m ready to start my first post of the week “The English Language, Courtesy and How We Abuse It and Can Improve It.” Don’t get excited I’m not going to preach about punctuation or diagraming sentences. I’m talking about the way we answer back when we are confronted with a question or a request from others; here are some examples on how to improve our responses:

Rosemary will call out to me from the other room JOE! My response is usually WHATTTTTT! This response does not sit well with her. My correct answer should be “YES DEAR, HOW MAY I ASSIST YOU.” Now are you getting my point? Let’s try some more and if we pass this vital information to our younger generation we may see a great improvement in courtesy and use of the English language to all.

Johnny will you please go to the store and get me some milk? The typical response would be “Why do I have to go?” Joey Z’s suggests “Mother, must I go shopping to the peasant market again?”

Bobby please take the dog out to do his duty. Typically “Why do I have to do it all the time?” Try this “Why Mother I would be glad to take Rover out for a bowel movement that would make his day more comfortable.”

An example at work, “I need these figures checked right now.” Your snappy response, “You’re kidding me right! Try “Allow me 1 hour to complete my present task, and I will be more than happy to spend the rest of the morning calculating those figures.”

Avoid a road rage situation when you are cut off by not replying, “YOU %&*%$#@## ASS.” correctly say, “Madam or Sir are you not aware the rules regarding the right of way?” “I would suggest you proceed to the nearest Motor Vehicle Office and secure a driver’s handbook. Depending how crazed the other person looks after such a response you may want get out of Dodge faster than a bat out of hell.

The pizza delivery man brings you the incorrect order, “I didn’t order garlic and anchovies, I wanted pepperoni!” Try a nice reply such as, “I never experienced the taste of that combination I may like the taste, don’t worry about the mix-up.”

Weldon have you finished that science report due tomorrow? “I’ll get started after I’m finished watching Sponge Bob.” One’s face turns red; blood boils and out comes, “Kid I’ll Sponge Bob your butt if you don’t get started NOW.” “Son I’ll be glad to tape the ending of the show, so you can finish the report and get a good night’s sleep with peace of mind."

So there you go Speakies a little language and courtesy training from Joey Z. Have a great and a wonderful evening.

MOMMY WHEN I GROW UP I WANT TO BE A

Good Morning Guys and Dolls:

Thursday is upon us again and as always I wish you all a pleasant good day. Today is “WHAT SHOULD I BE DAY.” To me it sounds like what would you like to be little guy or doll when you grow up? Hell I wanted to be everything and I’m sure most of you did too. Remember I was a wee lad in the 50’s and I’m going to list what I dreamt of being. Kids then wanted to be what they saw on TV, in comics and in their imagination so here is a list of Joey Z’s fantasy occupations:

Davy Crockett – until I saw how the movie ended and wanted to live longer than Davy did.

A Safari Hunter – that “Ramar of the Jungle Show” made me want to dream of this future position in the wild.

Pro Football Player – I loved playing football in the dirt and mud and putting on my helmet.

Pro Baseball Player – what boy never dreamed of this? I wanted to be a pitcher that could really smack the ball or the greatest second baseman ever; for some boys their wishes came true, mine flopped at the local dirt mound.

An Army Soldier – got enough of that stuff in the 60’s, I chose wisely and picked the Air Force longer life span in those days.

A Detective – I watched too many Dragnet shows with Joe Friday and 77 Sunset Strip.

A Captain of a Sailing Ship – got that idea after watching “I Sailed to Tahiti with an All-Girl Crew” a movie starring Gardner McKay.

And now for my true professional dream job as I got older are you ready? NO IT’S NOT A DOCTOR, LAWYER, INDIAN CHIEF OR A FIRE CHIEF BUT A “DENTIST”, YES A DENTIST. I was fascinated with all those tools and the job they do restoring teeth. As you can see there is no “DR. JOEY Z” posted in big letters on my blog. I can’t complain about the work I did in my life I enjoyed it all and I hope all you Speakies do too. So if your little ones come to you and say “Mommy, Daddy I want to be a circus clown or a ballerina” let them dream just encourage them to choose the right road in life to travel down and that’s being good. See you all soon.

AAARRRGGGG

Happy Hump Day Speakies:

Hoping you all had a pleasant evening last night and are ready to start a brand new day. Grab some coffee; a little Danish and your day will start off right. Today we celebrate “DO GROUCHY PEOPLE A FAVOR DAY.” I know I can get grouchy and I’m told don’t talk to me for the rest of the day. So try not to be a grouch anymore besides it puts wrinkles on your face and you look ugly.

Now it’s time to do some attacking Joey Z style. Once again it is time to vent my steam on stupid commercials, people, planned projects and other thorns in my butt.

Our new great governor in Florida is trying to cut everything in his budget proposal education, the legal system, police officers and teachers you name it and it’s on his list. This Bozo should be behind bars for his insurance company fraud instead of in Tallahassee, hope those who voted for him are happy you butt wipes. Big March against him coming up in Tallahassee soon.

Heard this one on the news last night, NASA is afraid of further federal budget cuts, they had plans to send astronauts to an asteroid. Why the hell do you want to explore an asteroid? Do they think they will find the remains of Bruce Willis and his oil drillers from the movie Armageddon there? Wake up NASA you can’t even fix the shuttles to take off anymore. Every week it’s back to the launch pad and back to the hanger for more repairs. If I were an astronaut you wouldn’t get me on that bucket of bolts.

Here in Florida the Casey Anthony Case (The Tot Mom accused of murdering her little daughter). Quit dragging out all those preliminary tidbits on this case and get to trial. The defense counsel has wasted enough of the tax payer’s money for the past two years.

Now for commercials, there are too many to name in one post, but here is one I saw last night. The family sitting around the dinner table and the wife is texting her husband that her parents are moving in. Then she texts her daughter that she is giving them her bedroom and can set up a twitter to help ease the little girl’s pain. Whoever wrote this commercial I’d like to ease your pain nimyo. That Zoom Zoom kid is going to get zoomed soon.

Here’s another gem, guy going to work spots hot female plumber going next door. He runs into his bathroom and starts dumping everything into the toilet hoping to clog it. His wife catches him dumping the dog food and gives him that strange look. I would go over to the toilet and dump his head and keep flushing until that idiot’s brains came out. There is more to come but not today I’m turning into a GROUCH.

Today is also “NATIONAL ALMOND DAY.” Go out and grab a hand full, this grouch is going to search for a Hershey’s Almond Bar. HAVE A GREAT DAY GUYS AND DOLLS.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY ELIZABETH

Good Morning Speakies:

Today I’m making this short and sweet today. I want to use this post to wish my Daughter-In-Law Elizabeth a very “HAPPY BIRTHDAY WITH MANY MORE TO COME.” Now Elizabeth let’s see what famous people were born on this date with you.

Pedro Menendez de Aviles – founded St. Augustine, FL.

Galileo – that famous Italian astronomer.

Susan B. Anthony – Fought for Women’s Rights, famous for that line, “I AM WOMAN HEAR ME ROAR.”
Lillian Disney – Walt’s wife.

Harvey Korman – that funny comedian starring in the Carol Burnett Show and in Mel Brook’s films like Blazing Saddles.

Chris Farley – deceased funny man from Saturday Night Live.

NOW AS WE SAY IN POLISH “STOLAT” which means:

Sto lat, sto lat, niech zyje zyje nam.
Sto lat, sto lat, niech zyje zyje nam.
Jeszcze raz, jeszcze raz, niech zyje, zyje nam.
Niech zyje nam!

Sto Lat (English)

Good luck, good cheer, may you live a hundred years.
Good luck, good cheer, may you live a hundred years.
Good luck, good cheer, may you live a hundred years.
One hundred years!

I now to leave you with a little Weird Al on your Birthday, enjoy the day Sweetie.

HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY TO ALL MY DOLLS

Happy Monday Morning Guys and Dolls:

Everyone should be happy today for today is “VALENTINE’S DAY” that day of love and affection celebrated between lovers. The day is named after an early Christian martyr named St. Valentine. Traditionally a day which lovers express their feelings of love by presenting gifts, namely flowers, candy and greeting cards. Times have changed many engagements to be married are done on this day, many couples get married on this day and a lot of restaurants make a good buck today. No matter if you buy a gift, go out to dinner or do nothing at all, just tell your Doll “I LOVE YOU.”

Another big event occurred this date back in 1929, better known as the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre. Members of the Al Capone gang gunned down the boys belonging to the “Bugs” Moran’s gang in a North Side garage on Clark St. in Chicago. It is considered to be one of the most horrible gang type massacres of all times. There is a great movie about it called “The St. Valentine’s Day Massacre” starring Jason Robards, if you have a chance catch it on the tube or rent the video.

I thought I would just keep it short today hoping all you lovers have a great day and enjoy the evening together. I would like to wish a very Happy St. Valentine’s Day to the ladies in my life; I love you all and am very grateful to have you as a part of my life. Sometimes I don’t show the affection as I should but I love you all very much. All my love goes to Roe, Elizabeth, Sam and my little Valentine Sweetie Nina. Enjoy the day girls. To my sons you have the best Dolls in the World along with me. I leave you with a little Valentine song "HEART AND SOUL."

WEEKEND WISHES ALL WE ARE HAVING A WHITE SALE

Happy Friday Speakies:

Our favorite work day of the week is here. Today we celebrate “White T-Shirt Day” you remember those some were plain and some had a pocket. I remember wearing t-shirts under dress shirts growing up and in the service at times. Now forget it I just put on the shirt I don’t want to mess around tucking all that stuff inside my pants. During the summer I like wearing the athletic t-shirts or as they call them back home Italian t-shirts. I think we should bring back a Dress Down Friday wearing a white t-shirt, blue jeans and black high top ked sneakers.

I always like to keep it short on Friday so I bid you “HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND.” By the way no songs about white t-shirts, so I picked out this one "A White Sportcoat and a Pink Carnation", enjoy.

FILL YOUR GREY MATTER TODAY AND ENJOY THE MUSIC

Hello Guys and Dolls:

The day before Friday is here, me with coffee and a donut wondering what to write about today. I think we will start off with some birthdays, than who bit the bullet and finish off with stuff that happened today. In other words a little history lesson and knowledge to pass along to the little ones to fill that grey matter.

Happy Birthday today to:

Alan Hale – great character actor who starred in many movies with Errol Flynn.
Jimmy Durante – that comedian with the hat and nose always closing his show with “Goodnight Mrs. Calabash.”
Lon Chaney Jr. – that horror actor.
Donovan – singer of “Mellow Yellow.” Hated that song.
Sharon Stone – that sexy long legs doll from Basic Instinct.
Lenny Dykstra – baseball player for the Mets and Phillies, now broke.

Bit the Old Bullet Today:

Iggy Krzyzanowski – Polish composer.
Laura Ingalls Wilder – that Little House on the Prairie girl.
Alex Haley – that Roots guy.
Buddy the Wonder Dog –starred in Air Bud.

Stuff:

Nude Anabaptists run through the streets of Amsterdam – start of the Red Light District.
YWCA is founded in NYC.
Pennsylvania RR begins passenger service on the new electric trains.
Glenn Miller’s “In the Mood” hits number 1 on the music charts.
Elvis records “Heartbreak Hotel.”
USSR swaps US spy Francis Gary Powers for Ruskie spy Rudolph Abel. That’s enough stuff for the little minds to absorb.

Today we also have a holiday to celebrate and we are doing it here in Florida. Today is “UMBRELLA DAY.” It will be raining most of the day and of course I left mine in the car once again. So if it is raining where you live grab that umbrella and do a little Gene Kelly’s “Dancing in the Rain.” Have a great day Guys and Dolls and I leave you with a little Glenn Miller to enjoy.

CRUMMY ACTS, TOOTHACHES AND HOME REMEDIES

Happy Hump Day Speakies:

I did some reading today on the Super Bowl Commercials concerning viewer favorites. I personally liked the Darth Vader one, the space ship picking up the car and the grandfather who came back from the ashes. The game was good not the best I’ve seen but good. The entertainment please, Christine Aguilera screwing up the National Anthem was a fair screw up but she did not top Roseanne singing it at San Diego Padres games years ago. The Black Eyed Peas performance reminded me of the Lambda Lambda Nerds performance in the Revenge of the Nerds Movie doing that techno thing. With all those other stars popping up, I was waiting for Snoop Doggy Doggy to make an appearance.

We have a strange holiday to celebrate today it is “NATIONAL TOOTHACHE DAY”, so if you are suffering from tooth pain this is your kind of holiday. My grandmother had a temporary cure for a tooth that started acting up. Take a shot glass of whiskey, take a big sip and hold it on the tooth for as long as you could stand the burning sensation. The tooth got numb and sometimes you did too. Those home remedies how could you ever forget them? I’m trying to remember some other granny remedies let see, there was one with Vicks Vapor Rub on your throat and then wrapping your throat with a white flannel cloth. I guess it was great for chest congestion. My favorite was the one for the flu or a bad cold coming on. Granny would brew some hot tea, with honey, a little sugar and a strong shot of whiskey, you drank that, went right to bed and I’m telling you in an hour you would be sweating out the flu. Now in the winter granny had those homemade down comforters and when you covered yourself with those you could not move but you were warm. I had one for many years and finally all the silky covering started to give way and that was the end of Mr. Comfort for me.

Now that football season is over, baseball is just around the corner. If you are a fan and visiting Florida, there are many cities that are home to spring training games so enjoy one if you can. That’s about it for today Speakies, have a wonderful day and evening, be careful and hug those family members when you get home tonight.

SMARTIES HERE YOU GO

Good Morning Speakies:

Hope you all had a nice weekend and for you sports fans I do hope you enjoyed the Super Bowl plus all those goodies your loving Dolls provided for your nutrition and that of your beer drinking buddies. Give them a big Hug and Kiss. Roe and I had a wonderful time at my son’s house with homemade chili, pizza rolls, salad, chips and a couple of drinks. Thanks Joe and Elizabeth we had a great time.

Monday mornings are usually tough for me to get started and to put my thoughts in writing is sometimes questionable on the subjects I want to write about. Guess what I took off Monday and today is Tuesday and thanks to my daughter-in-law Elizabeth, JoeyZ is going to provide you with some interesting facts, so I say to you, “Thought You Knew Everything?” Bet you didn’t know:

Stewardesses is the longest word typed with only the left hand.

Lollipop is the longest word typed with your right hand.

No word in the English language rhymes with month, orange, silver or purple.

Our eyes are always the same size from birth; our noses and ears never stop growing. My ears and nose looks the same for years now.

The words racecar, kayak and level are the same whether they are read left to right or right to left.

There are two words in the English language that have all five vowels in order: “abstemious and facetious.” I heard you saying out loud a e i o u.

A jiffy is an actual unit of time for 1/100th of a second.

A snail can sleep for three years, sounds good to me at times.

An ostrich’s eye is bigger than its brain. Most village idiots are the same.

Leonardo Da Vinci invented the scissors. This guy takes credit for everything.

Rubber bands last longer when refrigerated. Have to try this one.

Now you know some fact you can pass along to the little tykes and really impress them. Hope you all have a great day and please be careful out there.

TOOK THE DAY OFF

Sorry Speakies:

Took the day off to enjoy it with my wife and do a few things together, like lunch, some household purchases and the never ending pick up the prescriptions from the pharmacy. I'll be back tomorrow for sure. I had a reader from High Springs, Florida check in coming from a blog on Kalina Kielbasa. Welcome Kielbasa lover Speakie, if you are originally from Trenton, say where and if you find Kalina Kielbasa let JoeyZ know. See you Guys and Dolls in the a.m.

IT'S SUPER BOWL WEEKEND

Happy Friday Guys and Dolls:

For all you football fans it’s the big weekend for the “BIG GAME.” Remember to get out early pick up all that football grub and snacks to enjoy. Just be careful with the drinking and if you had too much let someone else drive you home. The weather in Texas is not going to be pretty but at least the game is inside. I hope those people who had tickets from up north can make their flights into the Dallas-Ft. Worth area good luck to them. JoeyZ is picking the Packers in this one. I guess we will never see a Super Bowl played outdoors like they played the old NFL Championship games in the 60’s. Seeing the Packers and Eagles play in the freezing cold, the snow covered and muddy field, that was football at its finest. All I can say is enjoy the game have fun and may your team win.

Thanks to my daughter-in-law Elizabeth on Monday I will be presenting you with some facts you may or may not have known. “Thought You Knew Everything”, is on its way. As usual nice and short, have a great weekend.

IF YOU HAVE SPEAKERS; LISTEN TO THE MUSIC

Good Morning Speakies:

I hope the snow and ice are clearing up for you guys up north, just take it easy with all that shoveling stuff. A sad day in history day occurred on February 3, 1959, three American Rock and Roll musicians were killed in a plane crash outside Clear Lake, Iowa. Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. Richardson better known as the “Big Bopper” died along with the pilot Roger Peterson. The day was made famous by singer Don McLean in his song “American Pie.” I was only 8-years old at the time but remember seeing all 3 singers on Dick Clark’s American Bandstand from Philadelphia. There were several good movies made about Holly and Valens and if you have a chance catch one on the tube. The internet site Wikipedia has a great article about the Day the Music Died for your reading pleasure.

I would also like to extend my wishes to my Chinese Speakies on a very Happy New Year today. Today begins the year of the “Rabbit.” So I say to you in Mandarin “XIN NIAN KUAI LE!” which of course translated means Happy New Year.

Let say Happy Birthday to some famous people today:

Norman Rockwell – that great American artist famous for those Saturday Evening Post covers.
Gangster “Pretty Boy” Floyd – he uttered those famous words I think “Don’t Shoot Me G-Man.”
James Michener – author
Comic Joey Bishop – member of Sinatra’s Rat Pack.
Actress Morgan Fairchild – Hubba Hubba.
And a sad farewell to Miss Jane Hathaway of the Beverly Hillbillies actress Nancy Kulp who died this date.

And a little history lesson today to honor four brave chaplains who gave up their lifejackets to shipmates on board the troopship S.S. Dorchester that was torpedoed by a German sub this date in 1943. Congress voted to mark this date as “Four Chaplains Day.” The four brave men were: Rev. Clark Poling (Dutch Reformed), Rev. George Lansing Fox (Methodist), Father John Washington (Catholic Priest) and Alexander David Goode (Jewish Rabbi).

I leave you with a little music from Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper. Have a great day.

GROUNDHOGS AND GHERKINS

Happy Ground Hog Day Speakies:

NEWS FLASH MR. AND MRS. AMERICA FROM PUNXSUTAWNEY, PA:

DID THE FAMED GROUND HOG PUNXSUTAWNEY PHIL SEE HIS SHADOW? THE ANSWER IS:

NO – SPRING WILL BE HERE SHORTLY FOR YOU SPEAKIES IN THE COLD COUNTRY. I THINK YOU’LL BE HAPPY ABOUT THAT.

Now for a little history lesson regarding Groundhog Day which is celebrated on February 2 in the US and in Canada. According to local folklore, if it is cloudy when the groundhog emerges from its burrow it means that winter will soon end. If it is sunny and the groundhog sees its shadow winter will continue for another six weeks. Enough for groundhogs today we have a week to enjoy another holiday celebration.

The first week of February is “PICKLE WEEK.” Those cucumbers that are transformed into those delicious treats we enjoy in a jar. I love pickles but Roe says no dice to our little Gherkin friends. If I open a pickle jar in the house the smell flies to her like the scent of a rabbit to a hound dog. I guess that’s why I don’t usually keep pickles in the house but I enjoy them dining out with a burger. There was this Jewish deli by my parent’s house called Lisook’s a little store, they carried groceries, fresh breads, rolls, lunch meats and they had that big pickle barrel with those fat Kosher Dills bobbing up like apples on Halloween. The smell of the garlic filled the store ah the smell and memories of pickles it brings to my taste buds. This celebration also includes peppers one can’t leave peppers out they go with pickles. Some of my favorite pickles and peppers are:

Gherkins – those little whole sweet pickles.
Kosher Dills – whole or sliced it doesn’t matter to me just put them on the dish.
Bread and Butter Pickles – good anytime for a treat usually of the side with a burger or dog.
Peppers – I love Pepperoncini those Greek peppers, sweet bell peppers green, yellow or red and those narrow sweet peppers, just split them open take out the seeds and start eating. I better stop, I might need a pickle fix shortly.

Have a wonderful day Guys and Dolls and thanks for stopping by JoeyZ’s Speakeasy where you are always welcome to make your comments known.

THEM GRAND OLD SPUNKY BROADS

Happy Tuesday Speakies:

Hoping to find all of you in grand spirits this morning. Go ahead grab that cup of coffee and that big donut and enjoy the beginning of a brand new day. I was thinking of some more of the food I dislike and thought I would bring you up on those palate displeasures:

Cauliflower – that white looking broccoli thing people throw in with those vegetable trays and say oh it’s great with Ranch dressing, bull.
Plain Yogurt – I’ve come to try fruit flavored yogurt and can put a few down at times but don’t push me.
All Bran cereal – reminds me of cat food.
Frozen pizzas – I use to like them but lately they have no taste, cardboard flavor I’m giving them the hall pass.
Squash – there’s an interesting word “What are you eating?” “SQUASH” sounds like something you stepped in.
Cornbread Stuffing – I want my stuffing nice and moist made with sausage, celery, onions and all those good ingredients. There you go Speakies just to name a few more dislikes of mine.

We have an important holiday to celebrate today: “SPUNKY OLD BROADS DAY.” This day honors them spunky old broads who are positive thinkers, fun to be around and butt stomping mature women over the age of 50 who want the most out of life and refuse to grow old and just sit there. THIS DAY I DEDICATE TO MY WIFE ROE, SHE IS ONE OF THEM ALL THE WAY. To all the spunky old broads enjoy the day dedicated to you and may you have many more to celebrate. Have a wonderful day Guys and Dolls.
